Erm... appropriate advertising??

Have just walked into the small town where I live and smack bang in the middle is one of those small advertising hordings. Today, ladies and gentleman, the advert is for Sex Tape, a film starring Cameron Diaz. I am no prude but why is Cameron on the advert, in peach knickers (I thought she was naked tbh from the waistdown and showing off her waxing) with her legs akimbo and Jason Segel her co-star is fully clothed??? What does this tell our children??

LadySybilLikesCake · 27/08/2014 19:29

Tis a movie with Cameron Diaz in it Wink

phonebox · 27/08/2014 19:33

I remember when the billboards were full of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

I was 12 at the time and my Dad tried to get me to write a letter to Tony Blair in protest. Pfft. I didn't give a monkey's.

LiveAndLetDie · 27/08/2014 19:35

I agree. I saw the advert at the bus stop yesterday and wondered why Cameron had no trousers on but Jason Segel was full clothed. Hmm I'm also disappointed Jason Segel isn't only in his underwear, I quite like him. Grin

Cantbelievethisishappening · 27/08/2014 19:52

Truly shocking

Agree with Lady
It tells the kids 'Here is a film starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel'

Perhaps time to pass on the keys for the outrage bus Wink

LadyLuck10 · 27/08/2014 19:54

Time to get a grip op. Seriously you are outraged by thisHmm

Cantbelievethisishappening · 27/08/2014 19:55

This one....
Christ...... was expecting a lot worse based on your OP

Erm... appropriate advertising??
SarcyMare · 27/08/2014 19:55

no it tells kids women are meant to be sexy and available, men are not.

AuntieStella · 27/08/2014 19:58

Perhaps she should be in a merkin and he in a thong?

Anyone know anything about the film that might explain the choice of promo material?

LadySybilLikesCake · 27/08/2014 19:58

Um... you're reading a bit too much into it. Sorry.

Cantbelievethisishappening · 27/08/2014 20:00

no it tells kids women are meant to be sexy and available, men are not.

Crikey...... talk about scraping around for hidden meaning. Funny.....but I didn't get that at all from the ad

Each to their own I guess.... Hmm

LadySybilLikesCake · 27/08/2014 20:00

Movie is about... a couple who make a sex tape (hence the title) and accidentally send it to all of their family and friends some time later. They rush around trying to get it back whilst doing silly stuff, like trying to resuscitate a dog.

HTH.

WaltJesseMikeGus · 27/08/2014 20:05

Did this only just come out? I think they've stopped showing it where I live.

The film is about a couple making a sex tape to spice up their love life and it saves to iCloud. They then give out iPads as gifts (as you do) and the sex tape is on all of them so they go on a mission to get the iPads back.

I've not seen it as it genuinely looks and sounds like complete crap.

I don't think it's inappropriate and I think you might be clutching your pearls OP.

MrsBoldon · 27/08/2014 20:07

I was expecting some kind of lascivious pose from your OP but can't see it. 'Legs spreadeagled' brings a different (more sex- act!) image to my mind than the actual picture.

As this is AIBU and everyone is different - what exactly do you think this is 'telling our children' that is upsetting you?.

LadySybilLikesCake · 27/08/2014 20:08

I've been to the cinema with ds this afternoon and it was one of the trailers, so I assume it's not come out yet.

It does look shit.

Low level sexism has been the mainstay of the media for decades. It is perhaps then no surprise that many women have become inured to it, and now think it's normal.

Doesn't make it right, and certainly annoys me.

kslatts · 27/08/2014 20:12

I think you are overreacting.

MrsBoldon · 27/08/2014 20:12

I'm an adult and sorry, I cannot see from this single image that 'women are sexy and available - men are not' from this single image so I'd be surprised if children thought that!.

Cantbelievethisishappening · 27/08/2014 20:17

brain Was going to click on your link but saw the words 'gender inequality' and 'Popular Films' and I just can't be arsed to read the same old yada yada yada Hmm

LadySybilLikesCake · 27/08/2014 20:22

WhataMistakeaToMakea · 27/08/2014 20:23

Agree op and brainfidget- 'we' are so used to everyday sexism we don't even notice when it's a 10ft billboard in our faces!

I don't want my kids growing up with these subliminal messages.

Also it looks like a crap film!

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 27/08/2014 20:24

OP I see where you are coming from and agree. As for those saying let it go get a grip etc sadly that's how sexism gets worse and more acceptable day by day

brainfidget · 27/08/2014 20:26

Can'tBelieve...

QED.... Smile

baffledmum · 27/08/2014 21:42

I think they should both be clothed. Everywhere we look their are images of airbrushed, half-naked "hot" women selling us stuff, images young girls in particular may not realise are unrealistic.

Women in many countries don't have a voice / education / vote, I count my blessings that I have a voice to object to this crap.

OP posts:
Rabbitcar · 27/08/2014 21:54

I agree OP.

SarcyMare · 27/08/2014 21:55

You are right this one single image doesnt say that, but the hundreds of images we see of this style every month DO build up and say that.

I may be highly sensitised today after seeing a report about sexism in video games where this was duplicated time and time again.
