to put dc money towards family holiday

genuinely can't decide if this is right.
a kind relative gives dh, me and all 3 dc £100 each for Christmas and birthdays. Usually I buy them a gift on the elderly relatives behalf (telling her first/asking) then the rest goes into dds' bank account to save. Next year we cannot afford a holiday (didn't have one this year either) but if we all put the money together we could afford camping in France where tent is set up etc. Is it wrong to use their money like this? Dc are 3yo twins and 6yo dd.

YANBU but the relatives might think you are, depending on what they are like. My granny used to have a go at my mum if she bought something useful with her Christmas money - "I wanted you to buy something personal for you, not for the house!" However a relative on DH's side always sends us £100, presumably meant to be split equally between 4 of us, and for a long time we used to spend it on a yearly membership to a place we all liked going to. We always told him in our thank-you letter that we had done this and he never showed any sign of disapproving. So I think it really depends on the giver. If you think they would be unhappy you could always just not tell them!

Do you usually buy the children big Christmas presents? If so, just swap it round, kind relative funds the big gifts and you fund the holiday. I'm sure the children won't mind or care who the gift giver is.

It is a great idea. I have previously bought my DGC Merlin passes and I have paid towards their holidays in lieu of Christmas/birthday presents. They have always been in agreement and in my opinion much better than adding to the mountain of toys they already own !

We often spend a portion of the DCs birthday money on a family day out, as they don't need any more stuff. They know this and love it, and now they're a bit older they help to pick the day out.

I don't see that this is any different! Enjoy your holiday!

I wouldn't be upset but I'd definitely check with your relative that they don't mind.

PumpkinBones · 27/08/2014 20:52

I think it is a lovely idea, wouldn't bother me at all if it was my gift.

rainbowinmyroom · 27/08/2014 20:52

I would be delighted. When I give someone something, they are free to do as they please with it.
