Yesterday banging and drilling started at 8.30. That's fine, it's not too early ( although DD1 had been ill in the night and was in bed, but that's not their fault.)

The banging and drilling isn't just through one wall, it sounds like its through all of them. And the dog seems to think someone is at the door / window so is barking constantly.

It finished at about 6.30pm and then there was less frequent banging and scratching (I think wallpaper being peeled?) until around 9.

This morning it started at 7.45. I'm having to ring my mum to get her to pick up my dog because the barking is crazy. Yesterday my DD2 couldn't have a nap because of the noise and was a very special kind of moody all afternoon & evening.

If they had told me, I could have arranged for our dog to be at my parents house, I could have made plans for these few days rather than planning these two days at home.

If you were having loud, prolonged work done and you knew you had a SAHM with young children next door, wouldn't you inform them??

I told them about the garden because most of the bushes were on their side and they have a low fence... It was more about having someone standing at their fence for hours if they might have garden plans.

I don't think it's unreasonable that they haven't let you know, I don't think it's a biggie.

My next door but one neighbours had a huge extention done a few years ago, I was at home then, didn't bother me really.

Are you semi detached, that would nark me on the other hand?

curiousgeorgie · 27/08/2014 10:52

We are semi detached. If it was the other side I wouldn't be able to hear it as we've got quite a gap, unfortunately, it isn't!

Yes I'd be miffed in that case.

curiousgeorgie · 27/08/2014 11:02

It is definitely loud... My neighbour across the street has text me about the noise being ridiculous even to him, so it must be really bad in my house.

It's curtesy. Something that seems to be lacking more and more.
You make prolonged loud noise, you let others know.
Oh and as for start before 8 you read them the riot act because they are not allowed. Google it.

Mintyy · 27/08/2014 11:15

Yes, I would always tell my attached neighbours (two of them!) if we were going to do noisy diy that lasted more than a couple of hours. Its just common courtesy.

"If over the weekend I'd likely mention it but not in the week."

What kind of logic is that DaisyChain?

DeWee · 27/08/2014 13:37

I would if it was long term, probably wouldn't for short term, which is what I'd count 2 days as. Also a number of the tradesmen that I use would do short jobs like that between longer jobs. So you wouldn't get much notice if any. They'd come round and say "okay if I start now" and I'd say yes or no. And they'd do what they could before the next big job was due or go onto another job if I couldn't do that day.

Our fourth neighbour in a year just started. Kill me now.
