.... To make slightly more noise than I need to tomorrow.

We live in a semi detached. The family next door have three teenaged children. For a household of 5 they are quiet enough, all we hear is general household noise, doors shutting, kids shouting at each other, normal stuff.
The parents don't work, I think the dad is ill, therefore no one in the house gets up early. This means that the kids, being teenagers, seem to be nocturnal.
I've just gone to bed and they have the TV on quite loud in the room next to ours. Not so loud as to be worth asking to turn it down but enough to be annoying.

AIBU to open and close doors more frequently and louder than I need to at about 7am tomorrow?
I'm just being petty really aren't I?

Yes you are.

Pipbin · 27/08/2014 00:26

I know, can I just slam the wardrobe door? Just once?

They must read MN, one has just stomped across the room and turned it off.

YABU but as the downstairs neighbour to a couple who do awful things like talk to each other and walk around (ridiculously thin ceiling/floor situation) I do sympathise.

LadySybilLikesCake · 27/08/2014 00:27

My neighbours are like this. You need ear plugs.

MerryBuddha · 27/08/2014 00:30

It will be a waste of your time, they will probably sleep through it!

Do you get on well with them?

Pipbin · 27/08/2014 00:32

I talk to the children but the mum and dad never seem to leave the house.
DH thinks we should lead by example.

I don't know how ill the husband is but to consider deliberately making noise to annoy them rather than speaking to them seems a bit childish and cruel to be honest. Why not just ask them if they could turn their TV down a bit at a certain time of night? Do you not get on with them?

Staywithme · 27/08/2014 01:21

Sorry, missed that bit about speaking to the kids. All the more reason to speak to them in a non confrontational way. It would be a shame to fall out and if you approach them properly you might even become friends.

Dontgotosleep · 27/08/2014 01:22

Yes you are being petty. They're teenagers which means they're noisy. You're old enough to know better. Were you not a teenager once

Pipbin · 27/08/2014 07:20

(This was a bit tongue in cheek you know, I wasn't serious)

We have a 9mo baby and live in between 2 houses full of students (terrace). I have to confess that when they have parties until 5am, I often get DD's noisiest toys out for her to play with when she gets up at 6am Smile.

Pipbin · 27/08/2014 08:11

Do you take slightly longer getting to her if she cries too?

I didn't make excessive noise this morning, which would have been closing the wardrobe door with a slight bang or calling the cat down the stairs. I did dry my hair more vigorously than I might do normally though.

I can't understand why anyone plays petty games like the ones mentioned here. It's childish.

SistersOfPercy · 27/08/2014 09:28

Our NDN slams her back door so hard that it shakes our bed. This is usually around 1am. We have asked her not to do this, she claims it sticks. Don't believe that for a second.
DH used to leave for work at 6am and was always mindful of the neighbours, however, after being woken at half 2 with a slam that not only woke both of us but DD as well he stopped bothering being considerate and will happily slam our front door on the way out.

Childish? Yep. Bothered? Nope.

YANBU
Might make them more aware that they are not the centre of the universe and to have consideration for their neighbours

magicalmrmistofelees · 27/08/2014 09:42

I think it's good for them to understand that sound travels through the walls!
