To worry about availability of the James Foley video?

Been away from the news for a few weeks and just caught up with this. I would never watch one of these videos but just saw a comment where someones 12 yr old daughter was shown the video by older kids on another child's phone and she was very upset (understandably).

Just realised that although I would never watch this, there is a possibility young kids are sharing this kind of thing with friends and it might be doing the rounds in schools. Wasn't sure where to put this and not trying to kick off the usual AIBU malarkey but is anyone else worried about their kids seeing this kind of thing? Especially as they will be back at school soon.

The girl spoken about was surprised and shown suddenly, didn't even have a choice in the matter.

Starving children with distended tummies is not in the same league as brutal beheadings though is it fluffy?

fluffyduffydoo · 27/08/2014 01:33

well if it's coming over social media and the internet why are the parents not taking more of a responsibility to block it?

Bambambini · 27/08/2014 01:36

Because when they are with friends or a thousand so kids at school - we have no control what they might be looking at - then add in peer pressure. This stuff is so easily accessible.

X post

I feel about 101 sometimes Bamb - this modern world gets to me.

Sometimes I wish I'd moved to a welsh valley gone off grid and home educated them from toddlerhood, but of course either that wouldn't have worked or if it was extreme enough to work, i'd be bankrupt and they'd be peculiar.

That's the only kind of thought process that 'solves' it. So so depressing.

I wonder if we are producing a nation of potential psychopaths but it can't be that bad can it? What are the long term effects of seeing this stuff?

It sounds as though maybe half of teens do view it ('outstanding' rated comp in leafy suburb is my sample for context)

ArsenicyOldFace · 27/08/2014 01:40

My 16 year old who told me this tonight doesn't have a social media account fluff and hasn't seen it at home, but school is awash with it. Even not viewing yourself you are apparently often in rooms where people are viewing and describing and discussing around you. At school.

How do parents control that? The school are ostensibly in charge.

ArsenicyOldFace · 27/08/2014 01:46

And i'm saying 'half' - my teen said 'most', I hope the perception is flawed.

Bambambini · 27/08/2014 01:48

Mine goes to a nice comp as well - I doubt that will make a difference.

My friends son goes to a school where the kids have to hand any phones into the office at the start of the day and pick them up at home time. Any phones found on them are confiscated and the parents notified. I wish they did that at my child's school. I was worried about them arsing about and being distracted - that seems warm and comforting now and quite innocent after reading some of your kids experiences.

YY re mobile phones. The school is still insisting on a mobile ban. Which, of course is ignored wholesale and then there is no control.

School PCs are an issue too though. My other teen's school has a specialist maths and science stream and a number of ICT geniuses in the student body. They have had a problem with 3 or 4 A* students repeatedly hacking the school network, accessing the darkweb and goodness knows what else. They involved the police and excluded in the case of two students (eventually).

I am sure there are for more pupils about who can quietly circumvent network controls for their own purposes and just don't do attantion seeking wheelies about it,

Bambambini · 27/08/2014 02:02

Maybe this has to be focussed on in a much bigger way. Some kind of action getting parents and schools to work together. I'd be happy to back such a ban. But, then not many posters responded to this thread so maybe there wouldn't be much support.

ok what are you telling your children who have seen the video?

fluffyduffydoo · 27/08/2014 02:06

It must be posted somewhere to get shared so is it on youtube?

It has to be somewhere on lne to be shared ?

ArsenicyOldFace · 27/08/2014 02:13

Mine haven't seen it (Foley).

One has never seen anything untoward (very strong character), one has seen some videos of a lesser level of violence (not recently).

They were saying that they used some of the strategies we had previously discussed re porn to avoid further situations but they didn't discuss it with me at the time and TBH I didn't consider violent videos a big risk/possibility. We have discussed porn A LOT. I've had a shock tonight

(sorry for vagueness and lack of pronouns - i'm being careful about their privacy)

ArsenicyOldFace · 27/08/2014 02:16

The thing is fluffy the day the story of Foley's death broke, the terrorists posted the footage to twitter. It was there for hours before twitter closed the a/c. So it has now been copied - it's out there. It can pop up anywhere, ghouls will find it.

Yes.

There must be ways to limit the viewing and the damage.

Maybe the thread will get more responses tomorrow.

Bambambini · 27/08/2014 15:33

Maybe I need to speak to the school about it and see what they say. Wonder how the bans on mobiles during school got momentum in other schools.

ArsenicyOldFace · 27/08/2014 15:39

The 'check mobiles and devices in at the office' system sounds good.

noblegiraffe · 27/08/2014 15:48

My school has 1500 kids. It's bad enough getting them to hand mobiles in when they've got exams!

ArsenicyOldFace · 27/08/2014 15:53

Ah, a teacher!

What do you think is usual re teens and violent material noble?

The school size thing did cross my mind. Just grasping for solutions really.

cozietoesie · 27/08/2014 15:55

I'm just wondering about the possibility of violence blunting sensibilities. Our parents/grandparents' generations were exposed to some pretty dreadful stuff in the last World War and that was happening to people they knew or were serving with. My recall is that they were calm about violence but not blunted as such - or at any rate not in their personal lives.

Maybe it's different in some way. I don't know precisely how if so.

Bambambini · 27/08/2014 16:00

I think many in the two great wars were traumatised and deeply affected - they just didn't talk about it but internalised it (maybe the calmness).

Context cozie? Being far from home in exceptional circumstances?

ArsenicyOldFace · 27/08/2014 16:06

Or, if you consider the home front (blitz casualties etc), you might see horrific things as a child or teen, but they were in context, those around you reacted appropriately to them, you were removed from the scene and comforted, you knew everyone was working hard to win the war, that the violence (hopefully) WOULD end.....

All very different from dismemberments casually but covertly viewed on handheld devices between gym and lunch.

chipshop · 27/08/2014 16:08

I saw a picture on Twitter of a post beheading still from the video and the short glimpse I had was truly horrific and has stayed with me. I wasn't looking for it and I imagine lots of people have seen similar without wanting to. I don't know how anyone could watch the video.

kilmuir · 27/08/2014 16:17

Humans are curious. I saw part of the footage. No shots of actual beheading. But oddly I felt more upset seeing him on his knees, wondering what was going through his mind.
I was up very late and only clicked on news link to get story

cozietoesie · 27/08/2014 16:38

Interesting thoughts. I just don't know - although it's certainly not something I would wish a child to be exposed to.
