To make the DC get the bus to school?

I don't drive and my primary aged DC go to a school 2 miles away. It was out choice to send them there as the local school was failing so we were very lucky to get placed.

Getting there can be awkward but I do sometimes accept lifts from a friend who also has DC there and lives near to us. However I am plannin this term to go it alone as I like being under my own steam...I always feel so guilty taking lifts from mate as she has to come out of her way to get us and she will not take petrol money. I've tried just sticking it in her glove compartment and she leaves it there to make a point! The last money I gave her sat there all term and she would not touch it.

I sent her a Christmas hamper gift last year and she was cross!

Trouble is, when my DC or hers have clubs or playdates, I am then left with no lift home etc and find the uncertainty is a bother.

So I thought I would just get bus passes for the week and get my DC used to walking to the bus stop (5 min walk) and tell my mate that I am just wanting to be independant.

I know in the snow and rain it won't be great and I might have to resort to the odd taxi if we miss the bus or if it's late...but my Mum says she will pick up when she can to make it a bit easier...DC are in year 6 and 2 so not tiny or anything.
Do you think this is wise? Will my (slightly bossy) mate be offended?
