WIBU to take DD back to doctor

I'm feeling a mix of totally unreasonable and quite concerned. Not helped by living abroad without my family and support networks.

DD2 (3) started getting high temperatures on Friday. As it was coming up to the weekend, she was complaining about her ear (and she is prone to nasty ear infections), I took her to the GP. GP said nothing wrong, possibly viral but that ear infections can "pop up within hours" so although she couldn't see anything then, it didn't mean she didn't have one.

By Sunday morning, DD hadn't slept, her temp was still hovering around 39 - spiking up to 39.7 on a few occasions. She was screaming about her ear being sore. So I took her to out of hours - diagnosed an outer ear infection, gave her ear drops.

We've completed 2 & half days of the course (all I've read say there should be an improvement within a day). She's no better, temperatures are still as high, and I'm beginning to wonder if there was something else going on.

WIBU to bring her back to the doctor tomorrow (so day 6 of temperatures) if she's still no better? She's not a PFB and I'm usually pretty laid back about illnesses, but the height of the temperature is beginning to concern me. But I'd hate to think I'm wasting their time.

Take her back. Sounds like she needs oral antibiotics x

vvviola · 26/08/2014 03:43

Yes, antibiotic drops.

I feel so sorry for her - it's her 3rd birthday this weekend and we're supposed to be taking a trip including a visit to MIL which she's all excited about ("going to see Nana for my birthday and have cake") and unless this improves quickly I don't see us being able to go. She just won't understand, poor mite.

Rang the surgery & they squeezed us in. Outer ear infection misdiagnosed - was in fact a middle ear infection. We've got a course of amoxicillin so hopefully that will help.

Poor baby.Hope she feels better soon and has a lovely birthday.I'm sure she'll be well enough by the weekend. Mx.

Glad you got it sorted. My DS had an ear infection whilst abroad that involved a 4am dash to A&E on Tuesday night. By Saturday he was well enough to fly, so will keep my fingers crossed that your DD is well enough to visit Nana at the weekend. They do heal fast at that age.

Glad you got it correctly diagnosed. Untreated middle ear infections in children under 5 can be very nasty.

vvviola · 26/08/2014 08:35

She's (finally!) asleep now, so hopefully a good night's sleep will help.

I'm very frustrated by the misdiagnosis - I'm going to have to take another day off work tomorrow which might have been avoided if she had started the antibiotic on Sunday.

And no wonder she wouldn't stay still to let the drops sink in, they probably would have felt horrible on an inflamed ear drum Sad

Anyway. At least we have the medicine now. I'll have to grovel to my boss again tomorrow!
