The ice bucket challenge is now seeming like a boys challenge

There is now loads of blokes doing the challenge on facebook, I now purely suspect because they have been challenged, no mention of their donation of to ALS, MNDA or even the hijacker, just seems to a challenge to each other now just for a laugh, the longer it has gone on now it has just become a new Ive been nominated now you do it. just loads of vidoes of people chucking ice over someone then nominating, bet they have not donated or any one else watching, just jumping on the band wagon to look good.

Tikimon · 26/08/2014 00:15

I didn't mention anything about my donation in the video. Just said who nominated me, and who I was nominating. It looked like a goofy, look what I did, now you do it. I still donated.

I wouldn't make assumptions.

comediewithme · 26/08/2014 00:16

YANBU when you say its a blokes challenge, Ive seen more man boobs on my facebook feed than I care to remember this week. I've seen lots of people not even adding the ice. And no mention of ALS at all.

Fanjango · 26/08/2014 00:17

What's annoying me is that they say they are doing the ALS I've bucket challenge then put in a link to prove that they have donated to Macmillan. They seem to be missing the point Hmm

Namechngedforthis · 26/08/2014 00:19

I just started a thread about a woman on twitter who in her video challenged the ice companies to donate their profits from it to ALS. She was most definitely a 'she'.

WildThong · 26/08/2014 00:23

My teenage DS and loads of friends, all males, did it. Everyone donated to MND charity.
Yanbu, it is mostly boys/men. A young lad died today when the prank went too far, drowned in a quarry, so sorry for him and his loved ones. Maybe enough is enough now.

Tikimon · 26/08/2014 00:33

Just because a boy was stupid, doesn't mean the challenge is dangerous. There's people that do stupid shit everywhere, this boy just happened to do it for an ice bucket challenge.

I don't get why people are using this as an example as to how this has gone too far. The challenge isn't to jump off a cliff into shallow water, just so you know...

Fanjango · 26/08/2014 00:36

I agree Tikimon. Unlike the necknominate thing this is a fairly harmless challenge unless someone alters it to "up the ante". Accidents happen every day and messing about in a quarry is never a good idea.

Longtime · 26/08/2014 00:39

Mainly women on my facebook page doing it.

WorraLiberty · 26/08/2014 00:39

So what though OP?

I mean seriously (and genuinely) so what? Confused

It's a laugh. People get nominated, they either take part or they don't.

They either donate or they don't.

But so what?

I honestly can't think of anything bad to say about it, considering charities have been given money (no matter how big or small) that they wouldn't have been given without this FB craze?

catloony · 26/08/2014 00:40

And good to everyone one who did it and then also donated to the charity, but now I see people doing it and I do not believe they then did donate, it was a pub/bloke/laugh challenge, they did it to make themselves look good only

Ok firstly, why are you bringing gender into this?

Secondly, why don't you believe people have donated?

Thirdly, why does it matter as long as everyone involved is enjoying themselves and charities get more than they would have, if this FB craze hadn't started?

comediewithme · 26/08/2014 00:47

I have a criticism! MAN. BOOBS.

Fanjango · 26/08/2014 00:50

Fwiw I'm now seeing it filter into children from our local primary schools. Not sure about that. The youngest I've seen on fb was a video if a 3 year old doing it. Shock

catloony · 26/08/2014 00:58

So if they decide to chuck a bucket of ice on themselves, post a video to their 200 to 400 facebook friends cos they have been nominated, everyone one of their friends probably already knows about the ice bucket challenge as everyone else now does, yay what hero.

If they they donate that is what its all about. And good on everyone that does donate afterwards. That's what It's all about and keep going and donating.

But as I was trying to say now I don't believe some of the people do, so now they don't donate but they are great in everyone eyes on facebook cos they chucked ice on themselves, they look wonderful cos they did "The Icebucket Challenge" woo hoo

But what did they do, they chucked some ice on themselves and went back iside, what does that do for charity?

They looked good on Facebook that's all

Terrible tragedy but if people are going to be stupid and take it that one step further then these things will happen.

Should it stop because people are taking stupid unasked for risks? In my opinion - definitely not.

WaltJesseMikeGus · 26/08/2014 01:02

But what did they do, they chucked some ice on themselves and went back iside, what does that do for charity?

The person they nominated could potentially donate.

So even though they haven't it doesn't mean it was for nothing.

catloony · 26/08/2014 01:18

And I do not think any charity would want children and babies sitting in their garden and have their parents put bucket of ice and water over their heads to raise money.

Because that is what is happening now, that is purely for Facebook, they are not donating in any way

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 26/08/2014 01:30

I'm lucky enough to be friends with some pretty fit blokes and have nothing but encouragement for them being both wet and shirtless.

No man boobs here.

:)

LackaDAISYcal · 26/08/2014 01:35

How can you possibly know who is donating and who isn't? I won't do it, but I have donated. I haven't posted about the fact I've donated, as it's between me and my conscience and my aunt who died of MND a few years ago.

You have absolutely no way of knowing the minds of people taking part in the challenge.

And it's mostly women on my FB feed, with some older children who are aware of what they are doing.

And anyway, a load of people do something silly for charity, film themselves and post it on FB . There are far more important things to get het up about imo.

LackaDAISYcal · 26/08/2014 01:36

and one particularly buff male friend. I may have watched that one more then once Wink

Bifauxnen · 26/08/2014 02:10

Joffrey - one boasty post can be overlooked, two (in this case) is goady Wink

Ive got a mix on my FB from 5 yr olds to 60 yr olds (including man-boobs), I'm still not doing it. though it does seem to be blokes who're trying to outdo each other.

Moving on, can anyone tell me how to get fit blokes on my FB?

Redglitter · 26/08/2014 02:15

My 11 year old niece did I it. Her video made no mention of donations but she her mum, dad, myself and her gran all made donations. That was about £30 donated with no mention so yes YABU to assume donations aren't being made

CustardFromATin · 26/08/2014 05:08

YABU. I've had a load of female friends do it, and family groups too.

Probably fewer female celebrities, but that is surely because they want to avoid the wet t shirt competition look on national media.

Yes, it is quite a bit about showing off, but if people are showing off while raising lots of money for an underfunded charity then I say more power to them! Far more meaningful than the stupid 'awareness' campaigns always showing up on Facebook.
