There's a woman on twitter talking about the ice bucket challenge. She makes the point that the companies who make ice cubes must be raking it in because everyone is buying ice. In her video she has challenged the ice companies to donate some of their profits to charity.

Whatever you think about the challenge you must admit she has a very good point. #nameyouricecompany

I bought 3 bags of ice today so I could defrost my fridge. £3 well worth it

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 25/08/2014 23:42

OldLady I don't have a freezer Grin The bag keeps in the fridge, if I keep the fridge cold and double bag the ice, but it wouldn't freeze the cubes. However, I admit that's a rare set up :)

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 25/08/2014 23:46

I get you, LatteLover, one of my fridgefreezers freezes my carrots, in the veg drawer of the fridge. I suppose ice cubes might "keep" there too.

Namechngedforthis · 25/08/2014 23:55

I buy all my ice, mainly because I never remember to refill my trays. Plus it stops the stupid walk you have to do from sink to freezer with full trays.

Name - put the empty trays in the freezer and fill with a jug. Voila, no spilling. :)

Oh yeah, Blush

Who the hell buys ice cubes?!

Anyone who has friends come round for drinks any more than occasionally. One ice cube tray does about three drinks which is a bit rubbish.

WorraLiberty · 26/08/2014 00:13

strawberryangel, no way more than a couple of trays per day.

The trays I've owned in the past, held about 12 cubes.

All five of us use approximately 4 cubes in each drink Grin

teeththief · 26/08/2014 00:14

LOL whois I have friends round. I also have more than one ice cube tray. Fair enough if people want to buy ice cubes. Like I said, I didn't realise you could even buy ice cubes!

slithytove · 26/08/2014 01:36

I'm pregnant and have a touch of pica atm, I'm going through iced ribena like it's oxygen, each with about 10 cubes in. Making my own though as I like to have ribena ice. I have 5 trays in rotation Grin

daisychain01 · 26/08/2014 04:27

I think John Lewis should donate.

I mean, just think of all the ice buckets they must have sold. You have to use an ice bucket otherwise it doesn't count and you have to donate £10 instead of £3. Grin

NoArmaniNoPunani · 26/08/2014 04:34

I buy both kinds of ice, cubes and crushed for making cocktails.

Redglitter · 26/08/2014 04:35

So a couple of ice makers are making a few £ extra profit. I wouldn't imagine it's going to make much difference to their annual accounts. Do they only have to donate for ice bought for the ice challenge or all ice Wink

pengymum · 26/08/2014 06:42

When I had 2 freezers, I filled ice cube trays, once frozen, decant into a bag in freezer. Then repeat. This meant we always had a bag full of ice cubes for drinks. Only time we'd buy ice is if having party or need larger amount.
But now only have 1 small freezer so £1 a bag is pretty cheap - better than trying to fit trays in.
I never do these 'challenges', for charity or otherwise. I donate or not as I wish & don't like to feel pressured/pressure anyone into giving.

JoandMax · 26/08/2014 07:07

I have loads of ice in my freezer in various forms, I think I'm a bit obsessed.....

We have a bag of ice in our drinks fridge plus a few trays which are special holders that you put slices of lemon and lime in (excellent for gin and tonic) plus in our main fridge we have a special tray for ice with 2 holders above - when the water turns to ice there's a button which flips them over and the ice goes into the tray, fill and repeat.

I think I could actually build an igloo

tittifilarious · 26/08/2014 08:35

Yes, DH went to tesco and asda yesterday to get ice (the kids wanted to do the challenge) but neither had any.

I use so much ice! I use it in drinks/cocktails, I use it when making jellies, I use it in a Bain Marie type arrangement if I'm wanting to chill something quickly before putting it into the fridge. At £1 a bag it's better than messing about with ice cube trays.

DoJo · 26/08/2014 14:18

Am I the only one who uses ice cube bags? Has there been a MN edict declaring them officially uncool (oh yes, I went there on a thread about ice!).

JeanSeberg · 27/08/2014 10:40

Ha ha, obviously DoJo, file it away next to toilet brushes!
