We are staying in a holiday flat, which has laminate floors (I can see why, easy to clean, but not good for noise!)

We have told the kids to be quiet when walking about, and although they are not perfect, have actually been quite sensible! for a change

We were out most of the day yesterday and today. And have been sat quietly playing top trumps since we have been back.

The neighbour downstairs just knocked and asked (nicely) to ask us to be quiet as they can here us being noisy, and this is their home, but they don't want to spoil our holiday Hmm luckily OH answered the door not me (I would have been polite and apologised, but glad I didn't have to!)

I know kids can be noisy and it is very annoying, but I really have asked them to be very quiet and respectful of neighbours.

It's pissed me off and I am worried about even walking about now :(

I know I am probably being unreasonable, and you lot will tell me straight Wink

Puts me off renting a private holiday flat, will stick to caravans and cottages in future, I wouldn't come back here to this flat which is a shame as it's lovely.

Anyway whinge over!

It sounds like they were pleasant about it, so try not to take it personally.

It's one of those situations which is no one's fault really. I am sure your kids are being as quiet as they can, and of course you shouldn't have to spend your holiday worrying about every tiny noise, but I know from experience how they feel too!

Bunbaker · 25/08/2014 18:23

It's a tough one, but laminate floors in an upstairs flat are horrendous for amplifying sound and are extremely annoying for anyone living downstairs.

It sounds like the landlord/owner have done the flat out very cheaply and not put a soundproofing layer down under the laminate.

Can you make sure everyone takes their shoes off?

LittleMisslikestobebythesea · 25/08/2014 18:26

All shoes off, and I know how noisy laminate is as we have it at home and hardly any noise sounds a lot louder!

I do understand which is why we have been quiet, so I'm just worried as we haven't been noisy, so I don't know what else we can do to reduce the noise.

I guess we just have to keep being quiet, and go out as much as possible!

Goodness - I suppose they're used to it being empty, are they, and so any noise sounds really loud?

Sounds like you're doing your best, not much else you can do - unless you're like neighbours I once had who ALL sounded like elephants as they moved around the house, especially up the stairs! And I swear they were tapdancing on the walls at one point... I had several sets of neighbours, btw - it was just this one family who were excessively loud!

What exactly do they mean about being noisy? Do they mean laughing/talking or footsteps on the floor? Are they running around with shoes on? If not I can't really see that laminate floors would be much noisier than a carpet to be honest.

Is it the people complaining who have rented the flat to you?
If not it sounds like they may be fed up with different people coming and going etc (all of which to be expected in a holiday let) and may not like the fact that it is rented out.

It is reasonable of them to ask you to keep the noise down if you are being over loud but not reasonable if you are just going about your daily activities IYSWIM :)

Hope you manage to have a good holiday.

LittleMisslikestobebythesea · 25/08/2014 19:36

No not the owners underneath, never had problems when the owners have been adjoining.

Just been doing the normal walking about, could understand if we had been noisy.

Yes I think they probably do! Maybe a bit of a warning?

It says in the instructions in the flat about taking shoes off, and how the noise travels (well words to that effect) so must have complained before.

I hate noise but it sounds like you're being considerate?! Don't be walking on eggshells for the rest of your holiday - be mindful but it's not your fault it's a rental which is what they probably resent - probably had some bad experiences. Some people will complain whatever. Was it late ? early morning? excessive tantrumming or just daily noise?

tittifilarious · 25/08/2014 20:04

I don't know if I'd be upset exactly but I'd be annoyed. Did the neighbour imply you're noisier than other guests? Do they have this problem frequently? If so, I'd say it's the owner of the holiday let who is unreasonable for putting laminate down in an upstairs flat which puts both the guest and neighbour in a tough position.

expatinscotland · 25/08/2014 20:07

Totally out off renting a holiday flat, yes.

You shouldn't have to worry about stuff like this whilst on holiday.

InternetFOREVER · 25/08/2014 20:12

Lots of upstairs flats specify no laminate/ bare floorboards, which I think is a lot fairer on downstairs neighbours. Hope you enjoy rest of holiday OP.

LittleMisslikestobebythesea · 25/08/2014 20:13

No late nights or early mornings and bedrooms are up another floor with carpet anyway.

No tantrums or anything.

I would choose a holiday flat but more carefully, the previous owners of the flats have all been lovely, but the owner doesn't live anywhere near, think I will stick to ones where the owner is below, or they are all holiday flats, or ground floor!

I think probably lamnate floors are the problem I lived in a downstairs flat my neighbour who lived above us was a single man in his fifties his rented flat had Laminate flooring it was really loud not his fault but I could hear every foot step!

expatinscotland · 25/08/2014 21:13

If it doesn't have really quality underlay. You can get underlay for laminate that is very good for soundproofing, but it is not cheap.
