Big family bash today where the star of the show was DGNiece, 14 days old. One of those babies who seems to be happy with pass the parcel, so everyone got a cuddle, and everyone put her either in the crook of the left arm or on the left shoulder.

That of course leaves the right hand free and the crook of the left arm lets the baby hear your heart beat which is probably soothing.

So what do left-handers, especially left-handed mothers, do? I remember shifting DS from arm to arm to give left arm a short rest, but the left arm was still the "side of choice". No lefties in my or DW's family (not in that sense, anyway) so I am left wondering. And MN will know!

I'm a leftie - and far prefer to hold babies in my left arm, even my left boob is favourite! Luckily I've always been able to write etc with my right hand too so not too much of an issue!! I have to make a real effort to make sure I use my right side sometimes.

Right handed but hold in crook of left arm. If she is up on my shoulder it is usually my right one.
I always carry my older dd on my right hip.
No idea why I do these things!
My left elbow is constantly sore from years of co-sleeping with older dd in the crook of my left arm. Pretty sure it is arthritis. I've started wearing a support bandage thing as holding dd2 for hours whilst feeding is making it really throb. I should really change arms but it just seems clumsy !

Thanks all. We have all four combinations here so I was wrong - there is no "rule". You live and learn!

I'm left handed, and always hold my baby on my left side (unless I'm feeding from the right boob - but I often need to lie down to feed from that side, as he doesn't like that position on my right).

I was thinking about this the other day, when I caught myself trying to write with my right hand! I often eat, type, etc right handed these days.

Leftie here. Baby always on right, bottle (or whatever other thing I'm holding) in left hand. As babies got bigger, they went on my right hip, leaving left hand free. But for a shoulder cuddle, left shoulder!

CarbeDiem · 25/08/2014 10:21

I can use both hands for most things - writing, eating and holding things. Naturally I feel more comfortable holding a baby in my left arm but use the right if I'm holding baby on my shoulder.
I've never really thought about it before and just had to check using a cushion :)
