Have a snooze on the sofa. If you got DC lots DVDs or free play

HeySoulSister · 23/08/2014 12:03

Aren't your dc older?

AtYourCervix · 23/08/2014 12:03

No children around. Just cannot sleep. It drives me nuts.

Are you working again tonight??

Pat45 · 23/08/2014 12:09

Make a decision to stay awake then but try to relax. Stick a film on or read a book. At least this way you are not getting frustrated and you will get some restful hours.

AtYourCervix · 23/08/2014 12:10

Thankfully not. But when I do a few in a row i still don't sleep much. Normally 4 or 5 hours. 2 really hurts.

My DH has just come off of a week of night shifts and just about managed 2 hours too Sad

Ironically today is the only day the water board are not drilling outside in the street, like they have been all week. Yet he still can't sleep.

500smiles · 23/08/2014 12:19

Nothing to add except nights are shit, and trying to sleep in the day and not being able to is even shitter. Feel your pain AYC sending Cake and Brew your way

AtYourCervix · 23/08/2014 12:21

Might get up and watch a film like pat suggested. And eat.

Eye mask? I'm out like a light with one of those and a podcast to listen to.

Borderterrierpuppy · 23/08/2014 12:23

I do nights too and have to take sleepeaze from boots, not the herbal ones, guaranteed about 6 hrs if I take them.
Glad you are not working again tonightGrin

Writerwannabe83 · 23/08/2014 12:26

I used to work nights and you have my sympathy.

I used to always make sure I ate before I went to bed and also stayed up for at least an hour to allow myself to wind down after my shift before trying to sleep. I'd then have a nice mug of Horlicks and a hot water bottle into bed with me (even if it wasn't cold as the warmth relaxed me), pop my eye mask on and bury myself underneath the quilt.

I usually slept for about 4 hours, then I'd get up and have something else to eat, go back to bed and usually get another 3 hours sleep.

AtYourCervix · 23/08/2014 12:36

It's almost chilly enough for my electric blanket. That helps a wee bit.

Having a snack then might try again for a while.

It's horrible working nights, esp when you try and grab a few hours sleep.

Can't switch yourself off and on like a machine!

MrsGeorgeMichael · 23/08/2014 13:25

highly recommend the electric blanket - mine went back on the bed this week Blush

nocoolnamesleft · 23/08/2014 14:27

Antihistamine?

differentkindofpenguin · 23/08/2014 19:34

Oh how I feel for you!!

Might make you feel better, I'm on the way in now, first night, got up early and had a busy morning so I could sleep, went to bed and- nothing!

Will also have to hang around til whatever time buses decide to start tomorrow morning!

ruralmyth · 23/08/2014 19:38

No advice, but lots of sympathy.
You will catch up soon & have a lovely sleep.

BigBirthdayGloom · 23/08/2014 19:42

Have you tried white noise? If I'm trying to go to sleep early or have a nap in the day it really helps get rid of the daytime noise going on. It's a free app.

RachaelAgnes · 23/08/2014 19:59

I feel your pain, my regular sleep is three hours when I'm on shift.
Then every so often I sleep for around twelve hours - about once a month.
On a week off, so am sleeping well, and when I should!
Can't wait to start my new job, short day shifts!!

taxi4ballet · 23/08/2014 20:01

Just think - you could have spent that two hours sitting in a jam on the M25... (on a good day)
