My brother has Aspergers and I am asking on here as I know there's a lot of information and expertise about autism and Aspergers.

There are lots of issues but the one I want to ask about is his social manners and niceties I suppose.

Yawns loudly and obnoxiously and doesn't cover his mouth. Same with sneezing! I was in a restaurant with him last night and it was very quiet and he did the loudest sneeze practically in the face of the girl who was at the bar. He did apologise when I said his name in a shocked voice but in a grumpy sort of 'yeah all right' way.

He talks very loudly and inappropriately - he was telling my friend and I a story where a woman had been swearing and the woman was from Liverpool so he was talking in this really high pitched scouse accent swearing. He was mimicking her but it was so loud and in a bank! We were both saying ssh, shush and he'd say ok sorry then resume the story!

I've probably missed loads out but telling him repeatedly doesn't make a difference so what will? Sad

I'd try posting on one of the special needs boards. There will be many people who can give you advice from there.

Hi
There's no magic answer. You can solve certain problems by just repeatedly saying certain phrases such as 'no swearing in public' - short, to the point, simple. But...there are just soooo many rules to learn. An NT person just picks them up as they grow up, but Aspies don't, especially the more subtle rules.
But you will need to be blunt - a simple 'sshhh' just makes him think he's temporarily talking too loud, so quietens, but then as he gets involved in his story again, gets louder again. You need to simply say 'either talk quieter, or you'll need to finish this story when we are somewhere private' - give him two attempts, and if he can't, just say you'll listen to it later.
Not sure that helps much, but I guess I'm trying to say give very clear, short instructions. Good luck
(myself, dh and dd all Aspies)

Unfortunately mini most people posting on there seem to have children with special needs - haven't had any responses when I've posted in the past.

Georgie now that makes me glad I posted here as that really IS helpful! Many thanks Flowers

Any time! Also forgot to say that the grumpy reaction is embarrassment for having got it wrong...again...
