Job interview was Tuesday. WIBU to phone to ask when I'll hear?

I normally do ask in interviews, but this is for my dream job and I was a little flustered and forgot.

I honestly don't think I have a hope in hell of getting it, but it's almost the weekend - and I really want to know.

WIBU to phone the main interviewer to ask when I'll hear? I can't decide if it would be pushy or simply pragmatic...

Hi, i think it's an absolutely natural question. You will think of a way to say 'when should i expect to hear from you', for me it also helps to ensure that they have worked this out themselves. It also reminds them that, if you haven't heard, you may be making friendly enquiries to remind them.

I pretty much earn my living asking exactly that question, it always surprises me how people hesitate, or forget, to ask. How they deal with it may colour your impression of them.

Makes me ask, though, what sort of person are they looking to engage? If it's someone who can straightforwardly follow up on agreed activities and encourage an outcome in the agreed timeframe then asking would be the thing to do. If not, well then, p'rpas not.

Good luck, too, I hope it goes well for you. F.

Yes, that's my dilemma. It is a "questioning" role - and I did ask questions, but not that one! And now I'm debating the pushy v. interested look.

I would give it till next week. It's been 2 days and might seem a bit pushy?

PricillaQueenOfTheDessert · 22/08/2014 10:58

An email might be less pushy? You could add a bit about being interested and no pressure but...
Good luck, let us know the outcome!

CarpeJugulum · 22/08/2014 11:06

Okay, consensus is to leave until next week.

It's for a local authority so I know it won't be fast but... (and I know I'm drip feeding!) I have been offered another job, which is good and I would like to do, but which isn't this dream job. So I'm trying to hedge my bets...

Even if they're waiting to hear back from references, they will definitely be aware that the weekend is coming and be trying to be in a position to offer the job / let the others know before then, especially for an interview from Tuesday.

They're likely to be held up by a reference being on holiday / working part time, given the time of year.

Give them a call, they can at least then explain the delay. If we were held up by a reference, we'd get in touch with the "definite no" candidates, and hold off on our preferred candidate plus one or two others, in case they decline the job, so it might be a good thing you haven't heard yet.

WhatTheFork · 22/08/2014 11:09

I don't know. If it was my dream job and I felt I'd nothing to lose, I'd phone. You'll be back at the front of their minds if you do. Perhaps you being keen will swing it your way.

WhatTheFork · 22/08/2014 11:09

Whoops, posted before saying good luck.

MrsGeorgeMichael · 22/08/2014 11:59

phone now! unless they were interviewing over several days decision will have been made. speak to HR dept asap. good luck Grin

CarpeJugulum · 22/08/2014 12:22

Still discussing. Shock

Well, at least it's not a total "no". (And I didn't tell them who I was and I blocked my number so it can't count against me Blush )

Will update when I know!

Quick update: I didn't get the dream job, so have sent off all my stuff for the other option.

Shame, but everything happens for a reason.

I'm sorry you didn't get the job Flowers

Best of luck with the other option.
