To think a local newspaper should not print full exam results

Our local paper prints all the schools' a level and gcse results in their full glory, or not, as the case may be.

This is great for the A star pupils etc but I feel a bit sorry for those students who didn't do so well.

Not only have they possibly got the disappointment of the results but also the residents of the whole city and local villages seeing them as well.

Maybe you sign some sort of disclaimer with the school for them to disclose the results to the press, I'm not sure. I remember giving permission when my DC were at school for their photo to be published.

I just think it's not necessary.

BILGE
we got our results in the post (1980-83) .
I have never (thankfully) lived in an area that published results

I took my A levels twice
it was bad enough having the whole holiday hotel knowing how badly I did first time, I'd have been utterly mortified (and the former head of my school sacked even sooner) if the results had been in the paper

my second set of a's were done at a crammer so of no local interest at all

My children are fully identifiable to people who know the local area but I take great care to ensure that non stakeholders do not work out who they are.
Amusingly there is one MN poster who I'm pretty sure I've met several times but she does not realise it.

And I am calling no one a liar. That is a ridiculously inflammatory thing to say.

Except you might as well of called me a liar.

What's so hard to believe about the school practically telling me "tough" when I kept asking them not to publish his results? They thought I was overreacting and that I was just trying to save embarrassment or something when it was so much more than that.

Do continue to bury your head in the sand and keep thinking it's not a big deal though. Your attitude is horrible.

writtenguarantee · 22/08/2014 20:51

wow. I can't believe this happens anywhere. Privacy anyone?

ForalltheSaints · 22/08/2014 21:51

What other news is there in August? It's referred to as the silly season for nothing.

Still think it's wrong though, unless all employees and directors of the paper's exam results are published alongside.

TalkinPeace · 22/08/2014 21:53

is this a rural thing?
I've checked with FB friends : unheard of in london and the south east

in fact DCs school has held back their cohort stats because they are waiting on English which might make HUGE chances to their league table

Finney2 · 22/08/2014 22:04

Rural? You do know there are towns and cities outside of London, right TalkinPeace? Wink

Anyhow, the main reason newspapers publish the results is not to embarrass anyone, to because it's news. If newspapers never published any personal notation then there would be no newspapers. As I said upthread, we've only ever had one complaint so I think most people enjoy seeing the results.

Finney2 · 22/08/2014 22:04

*but because it's news

And *not notation, but information.

Sorry,

TalkinPeace · 22/08/2014 22:07

Finney
yarp, I've not lived near the M25 for 30 years

and had never until today heard of newspapers publishing individual results
and until I'm told the name of a local paper that does it (with link) suspect the whole thing is a MNzilla hoax

Finney2 · 22/08/2014 22:11

Ok, AFAIK the Lancashire Evening Post still does it. They don't publish them online though, only in the paper. The reason they aren't online is because the system for putting stories online takes so fucking long that some poor sod would be sat there for days uploading them all. Bloody Atex.

(I don't work for the LEP, but same huge company using same computer system)

PausingFlatly · 23/08/2014 09:17

Oh.

I came on to post another amusing historical one. And instead people are being personally snipey, mocking, and accusing each other of lying and hoaxing. Sad

There are interesting accounts from various times and place, as well as serious issues to discuss here; maybe we can do it nicely?

buddles · 23/08/2014 09:21

The local paper printed all the names and results of the courses at my old college a few years back. They got my result wrong they put that I got a Pass when in fact I got a distinction (only two of us did) I was very annoyed!

Yes, it is wrong.

PausingFlatly · 23/08/2014 09:33

I was going to post from the Aberdeen Journal of 6 July 1870.

Just above an advert for

CARRIAGES FOR SALE
A second-hand Phaeton, with Hood

is the following:

GYMNASIUM, OLD ABERDEEN
The following PUPILS stood Highest in their respective Classes at the close of the term ending 1st July. Each Class is divided into Four Ranks, determined by Periodical Examinations, and Certificates of Merit are awarded to Pupils in the First and Second Ranks. The minimum of marks entitling admission to the First Rank is 80 per cent. of the entire value of the Examination Papers. For the Second Rank the minimum is 65 per cent.
The subjoined List contains the Names of the Pupils in the First Rank.

It goes on to give pupils' full names under the headings

Greek & Latin
Mathematics (divided into Geometry & Algebra)
Arithmetic
English (inc Scripture)
Elocution
History & Geography
Writing
French & German
Drawing (inc Model Drawing, Landscape Drawing)
Gymnastics & Fencing (inc Broadsword Exercise)
Advanced Classes (with only a few pupils in each)
– Chemistry
– Astronomy
– Natural Philosophy
– Trigonometry
– Mechanical (including Architectural) Drawing

Bilge? Is that an acronym?

My degree results went up on a board as well bog, and A & O levels. Do schools no longer do that?

I read a novel set in the time of the school certificate & the heroine had to go and buy a paper to find out.

Nomama · 23/08/2014 09:50

justanother please, I did not. I expressed my surprise, I do find it very difficult to believe that any head would publish any results given your circumstances. From my perspective that is unthinkable. I have not called you a liar, I would call the person you spoke to an ignorant twat... and worse.
