to buy a new pushchair when my DC2 is 20 months....

Hi - I'm Rachel, and I am a recovering pram addict. Loved ones are concerned I still have a problem but am in denial...

During my first child's first 3 years, he had in total 15 different types of pram. I used to pore through pram magazines religiously, knew every type, developed an extensive knowledge on the subject. I justified my habit with the usual excuses..."I don't drink, smoke or go out.. It's my one vice "... "people spend way more in a car, it's my set of wheels! " or that old chestnut, "It's not for me, it's for my son, that coordinating footmuff n changing bag will really increase his sense of security and good taste!"

Like an alcoholic thrown out of pub after pub, certain shops quickly became off limits to me as the staff thought I was weird and i'd have to travel town to get my kick, of trying ones out on the shop floor.

I thought I was over it.... thought I'd learned my lesson! did my research. Found the perfect pushchair for DC2 in the shape of the baby jogger city versa and have been happily using it, for a indulging my occasional need for new pushchairs by changing the buggysnuggle, when I get a craving.

However, we have recently moved to a city and I am sick of l getting in people's way with the cumbersome big buggy.... And coincidentally, I only realised this when I saw the cath kidston floral spray maclaren for a budget price on eBay.....

aibu to get a new one when I spent nearly 500 on my perfect one a year ago?? More to the point, AIBU to buy the cath kidston one when I can't stand her stuff, except I love the stroller....

Help.. I can feel myself slipping back into old thought patterns and is only a matter of time before an all day mothercare/ john Lewis / nappy pin spree, even though little one is practically walking everywhere now!!

I jazzed them up with funky footmuffs and changing bags ;)

TrippingDownMammaryLane · 20/08/2014 20:11

Cool Schrosaw yes they are meant to be the Rolls Royce of the pram world! But yep not that nippy for shops etc, my friend drives everywhere really.

Havanas I never tried the Phil and Ted, always seemed lovely practical ones thougH but they should stop caking then sensible names n make a model called ' Bodacious' or 'excellent' haha!in all my time I never tried a three wheeler either, I am indecisive enough..

Oh my god have you all seen the bikes that convert into prams and look like little tents when you push them?? WANT!!!!

TokenGirl1 · 20/08/2014 20:17

I've had 7 prams for my 2 and bought my latest one in Feb, a new McLaren for £30 (let's just say my dh is good at negotiating). I still check out other people's prams and am considering buying one more. But then I've only spent about £700 in total including a brand new double with all the bells and whistles that we still use 4yrs on. I'm gutted my two are coming to the end of pram use but borrow my niece so I can push her around :-)

TrippingDownMammaryLane · 20/08/2014 20:19

Chottie that is so cute, reclining is a given on today's models, we are so spoilt for choice.

Abs good on ya what a great idea!! I often pimp up prams but just for my own/ kids benefit ... I like sewing on cute ribbons n buttons, I don't know why more people don't! Brings a bit of colourful life. I've got a red quest, I tied a rose scarf on the hood bit it's beautiful, gonna get plain red footmuff n try n find matching ribbon. Trouble is who in God's name will want it after I've ransacked it haha

Sneaks back in one of the prams in the loft was a emmal junga but I didn't know thats what it was until recently, I bought it of someone my mum worked with.

Don't know about bikes but I do have a freeryder, scooter that attaches to the explorer as a buggyboard

HavanaSlife · 20/08/2014 20:33

Molotov · 20/08/2014 21:09

OP, I realised after posting that the pram/pushchair thing for me has something to do with keeping them as babies for a bit longer, iyswim?

I'm at a point where I'm deciding whether to ttc #3. Having a new pram doesn't sway me into doing so, but there is a sense of romance to it: the anticipation in preparing for a new baby.

Molotov · 20/08/2014 21:12

And the 'lust' factor is only for the pram in terms of a design object! New trends come every year and I think "oh, if they'd had that when dd1 was a newborn! ..."

jacks365 · 20/08/2014 21:18

I had an teutonia and a maclaren which saw me through 3 dc and were brilliant. Big gap then dc4 who has a jane rider due to living rurally and a maclaren for trips to the city. Dc4 is mostly walking now so what I could really do with is a soft carrier I could keep in my bag just in case.

TrippingDownMammaryLane · 21/08/2014 00:10

Havanas - that buggy is stunning! I have only ever seen red ones of them, how did you do it? sell the emmaljunga it will be worth a mint now!

Molotov yes I totally know what you mean about keeping then as babies, think I did that a bit with my son - my daughter is so different though really independent already so an now inclined towards a nippy little buggy she can jump on and out of. I love seeingbabies in furry buggly snuggly footmuffs though, always lusted after a sheepskin one! They cost as much as a pram!

Hmm the bee came out during the end of my ds time in a pram, I was so annoyed cos it seemed just exactly what I wanted. I would never get a bugaboo though cos it annoys me how much the accessories cost!

Jacks what a truly splendid idea about the fold up handbag sized buggy!! Will look out for you on dragons' den. It can't be far off..?

Jacks -

I had 2 really crap pass me downs in ds first 20mths, I got voluntary redundancy so splashed out on a bagaboo bee - fab for out in town :) it's still in good shape now he is 3.5 though he needs it less it is good if you're out all day and he may need it and is light and manoeuvrable enough to operate with one hand plus if we go for dc2 it lays flat and you can get a cocoon for a newborn and you can get pretty colours for it too. It does well second hand and people sell off accessories all the time.

maddening · 21/08/2014 07:39

And of money was no object I'd get the 4mums origami stroller - v flash !

stargirl1701 · 21/08/2014 07:49

I was going to say YABU but, on reflection, I have the same issue with cloth nappies. I buy & sell them to get the perfect 'stash'.

Pram wise I did a lot of research and them bought the Stokke Xplory. We still love it 2 years down the line. It pushes like a dream. I've never pushed anything I like as much. Recently, we bought the sibling board so DD1 can ride when DD2 is in the carrycot. With the Winter Kit, we have easily spent £1000 but if it lasts both girls it will have been worth it.

CouldntGiveAMonkeysToss · 21/08/2014 07:50

If you need a lightweight small stroller for your 20 month old you can get one for 20 or 30 quid. I've had a single reclining pushchair, a double pushchair and a lightweight stroller for two children. None were expensive and I walk/bus everywhere. You do not NEED to spend so much of buy loads of pushchairs. YABU

appealtakingovermylife · 21/08/2014 07:53

Op I totally get it. Say no more:)
( previous pram addict here, you can and will recover!)
Unfortunately, you will probably find another child related addiction to replace it, mine is oilily clothes for dd.
There- I said it.
Though in my defence I buy at Xmas/Easter/sales.
And always "halve" the price when showing dp!

HavanaSlife · 21/08/2014 07:54

I had it made buy someone who customises buggies on fb, it was her first attempt at a smart so I got it quite cheap.

The explorer is great on sand, I bought it after the bduel was so crap in snow that I couldnt get ds2 to school, it hasmt snowed since!

HavanaSlife · 21/08/2014 07:55

Ive moved on to car seats now

feebeecat · 21/08/2014 08:03

Damn it, you've got me looking at pushchairs now. DTs are 9 & I don't think will fit - but I could try couldn't I???
Pushchair envy, it never leaves you . . .

Ronmione · 21/08/2014 08:03

Oh I am so addicted to prams, it's can be a real problem.

I have had a
Babystyle oyster
Graco
Mama and papas pilko
Baby jogger city select
Stroller
Luna x2

I Love looking at catalogues. I really wanted an I candy but was talked out of it, I still lust after it.

Notso · 21/08/2014 08:04

I really want a Versa or an Elite even though DS3 is 2.4.
I am hoping to get enough to buy a second hand one from selling my Zapp and my BJCM double, I also have a 2nd hand micralite toro but that is really old and rickety.

I had a massive Mothercare 2in1 for DD. It was awful but affordable I had serious pram envy!

I spent a lot on various models but always always ALWAYS wanted a Silver Cross Balmoral, my dad did offer to buy it when we had the first but sensibly I refused as we had no idea where we would be moving to and he bought a Jane Slalome.

Then I had a cheap one for holidays, then came the fun of buying a double.
Started with a twin Aria - hated it
Kidz Kargo tandem - resold it the afternoon it was delivered
Cheaply side by side - got rid as they worked out they could fight.

Got given a bugaboo single when the eldest wanted to walk - found out why when it seemed to want to always go left, almost as if it needed its tracking doing.
Bought a odd Winnie the Pooh patterened one - was ok but not the sturdiest
Won a Bertini pushchair on ebay - very weird as it had steerable wheels but drove like a dream.

Got pregnant again and realised that the hunt for the double would have to start again.

Was given a Phil and Teds With all the extras which was the final one I had. I moved on to buying extra bits and new covers and such like for it.

Then there was the one that the MIL had at hers which had me all excited when she said it was a proper Silver Cross - it wasn't and it was the one she had had for her youngest and she had kept. Plus the half a dozen weird pushchairs her friends kept giving to her for me.
