Go to Largs. I have a flat you can have!

OooohShiny · 19/08/2014 16:21

Bridge of Weir, Houston etc like someone else up thread mentioned are nice. i lived in BoW for a while and it is lovely.

I suppose it's entirely dependant on how 'close' to Helensburgh you want to be. I live in East Ayrshire, commute to Glasgow easily each day and Helensburgh is just over an hour away which to me, having been born and brought up in the country, is an entirely reasonable distance to drive.

But I'd avoid Gourock like the plague....it's away to the side Wink

RubyReins · 19/08/2014 18:41

Oh Rhu is lovely! Lived there when I was in P2 and P3. Really like that part of Scotland but Gourock is less nice than other parts! #diplomaticface

roughtyping · 19/08/2014 18:49

Bridge of Weir and Quarriers Village (I got married there!). Rhu and Cardross are nice.

MrsWedgeAntilles · 19/08/2014 18:53

Inveraray's lovely, as are a lot of the villages round about. If you want to go rural in that part of the world though the secondary schools are all a fair commute - up to about an hour with any further away than that being eligible to stay in school hostels, so effectively boarding. However, a lot of the village schools are amazing and the child to teacher ratios are often amazingly low.

I don't know anything about Gourock at all, except that its off to the side :)

TheMaw · 19/08/2014 18:55

Honestly, I'd avoid Gourock. There are some lovely houses but it's just not a great area. Cardross is lovely though! I grew up near Helensburgh, feel free to PM me of you think I can help at all!

luckyjazz · 19/08/2014 18:56

I agree with rough, Bridge of Weir, Quarriers Village, also Lochwinnoch, all lovely wee villages, Lochwinnoch has a lovely wee primary school.

Pumpkinpositive · 19/08/2014 18:57

I heard Gourock was very naice, but Greenock was as rough as a badger's arse?

Largs is supposed to be "God's waiting room".

Nice ice cream though. Smile

Anyexcuse · 19/08/2014 19:02

I'd consider round stirling if I was you. Easy commute to Glasgow and right side of the city for Oban. Dunblane has fab schools and has a small town/wellies feel. Folk will say it's out your price change but that's not the case anymore. Have a look!

inmyshoos · 19/08/2014 21:04

pumpkin if we are making a decision vased on ice cream alone Helensburgh would win over largs for me every time. Cafe in Helensburgh does delicious ice cream. Grin

up the back of Gourock is lovely and you can get some stunning views over the Clyde.
Have you considered Bishopton

pinkr · 19/08/2014 21:20

Nothing wrong with most of Gourock plus the views are outstanding. Greenock is mostly Yuk though and port Glasgow is awful full stop.

pinkr · 19/08/2014 21:22

And I would have to say that Helensburgh town centre was dreadfully run down and tired. Gourock has had a lot of new independent shops opening and the main St, kempock St, is nice for a browse

olaflikeswarmhugs · 19/08/2014 21:28

Hmm Doorbell

Gourock is fine there's nothing wrong with it . But for where you need to travel to your better on the other side of the Clyde .

dotdotdotmustdash · 19/08/2014 21:35

I would say the Bridge of Weir/Houston area is much nicer than Greenock/Gourock. I spent a year travelling from Paisley to Greenock every day and there was a always a huge grey cloud over the whole area.

Something like this?

Some lovely villages around Helensburgh.

Getting to Oban from Gourock means a ferry trip to Dunoon (£££) and then a lengthy drive or drive east to the Erskine Bridge to head up that way. If you are in Helensburgh or Rue or any of those villages north then you just head north and then west.

I'd give it a miss if you need to get to Oban regularly.

Feckbloodypets · 19/08/2014 21:45

Gourock is actually really nice in most areas with some good Primary schools and easy access to all the high schools. Depending on the age of children you are in walking distance of a 2 really good parks, outdoor swimming pool, rugby, cricket, yacht and rowing clubs and some really nice pubs, cafes and a nice restaurant. Some decent boutique shops and an hours drive to Glasgow. Easiest way to get to Oban is on the ferry and the drive to Helensburgh about 11/2 hours. But with your budget I would possibly be looking in Greenock west end. Great houses, quieter local but amenites not as good

Ultracrepidarian · 19/08/2014 21:47

I've a friend in Arrochar it's lovely and the school is very good, Cove is meant to be nice and Luss. I'm highlands but visit occasionally as the toy shop in Helensburgh is amazing. That's all I know, not sure it will help; my best mate rented in Helensburgh briefly but didn't like the school can't remember which one her ds went to? Gourock looks ok driven through once or twice it has a big gelato parlour if I'm remembering correctly.
Oh and we once viewed a house in Strone and Lochgilphead both lovely areas but we ended up in a brilliant area much cheaper but very remote and are very happy for now.

KissMyFatArse · 19/08/2014 21:51

Helensburgh is having a lot of money spent on it right now and it will look great once done. Good schools too.

I love in balloch so may be biased but id live in balloch, rhu, Helensburgh, cardross and surrounding areas.

Easy transport links from dalreoch to either balloch way or Helensburgh into town x

expatinscotland · 19/08/2014 21:57

Arrochar/Tarbet has a train, too.

roughtyping · 19/08/2014 22:02

anyexcuse isn't stirling a bit too far east? I would've thought so.

I would love to live in Stirling though!

expatinscotland · 19/08/2014 22:05

Stirling quite far east from Helensburgh and Oban.

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/08/2014 22:06

I'm in Helensburgh, it's very much a town of two halves.
Primary schools are great, if you avoid the bad one, (easily done), no choice of high school unless you are going private or catholic.
The town is being done up as we speak, though shops are closing, like all towns.
We have recently got a Waitrose, just four of them in Scotland, we have an amazing deli, I can get Chinese ingredients in a local shop, my GP will see me in hours if I need, and do home visits.
Half hour trains to Glasgow and Edinburgh.
15 minute drive to Loch Lomond, which has Aldi and a Michelin starred restaurant.
There are worse places to live!

shechameleon2 · 19/08/2014 22:19

If Largs is God's Waiting Room it has a lot of weans in it too with 3 primary schools and an oversubscribed secondary!

Its actually a pretty decent mix of age ranges with superb sports facilities - also depending on ages on DC it looks like the secondary school will be rebuilt by 2018.

£240K will get you a nice bungalow or 3 bed new build in Largs.

expatinscotland · 19/08/2014 22:20

Largs was allright.
