We were invited to neighbours' 3 & 6 grandchildrens' birthday.
We're Christian, the grandparents are as well, so i think.... a nice edition of childrens' Bible should be nice?

Or should i just buy a big Lego?

Loving the idea that atheist have more leisure time! Grin. I'm not an atheist but I might start pretending to be if it is reflected in my annual leave entitlement!

I wouldn't want my children to be given a bible because it is presumptuous. A book on world religions would be more acceptable, although the children would still find it an extremely odd, dull present.

We do have a bit more leisure time. Particularly on Sunday mornings... I love to grind my axe on a Sunday morning. Why does that sound rude?

OP, are you sure this thread isn't a joke? What do you REALLY think a child would prefer - a bible or a pack of lego? Is there any universe in which the child would prefer a bible? Are you trying to suck up to people?

What are the necessary critical thinking skills required to be an appropriate recipient of a Bible? And at what age does the average child acquire these?
Any book given to a child is going to require a certain amount of ethical interpretation, either on the part of said child, or their care giver (or usually both). I presume the OP did not intend the Bible as some kind of assault on the ethical boundaries of the child recipients, any more than any friend giving any kind of book, with a plot or message, would have done.

I would go with a Bible, if you feel that's what appropriate.

Cockadoodledooo · 20/08/2014 00:27

I wouldn't give a bible as a birthday gift. If they've been christened/dedicated they'll have bibles coming out of their ears.

My dc have been given some great Christian-themed jigsaws and colouring books over the years though and they love those.

Cockadoodledooo · 20/08/2014 00:29

Those gifts were from godparents/Christian friends though, rather than neighbours. I wouldn't expect religious gifts from neighbours (not that I expect gifts from neighbours, if ykwim!).

JazzAnnNonMouse · 20/08/2014 04:46

Please don't.
Dhs parents are religious. We are not. If their friends were to give our children bibles we would actually find this insulting. Depending on who it was that gave it I would potentially see it as undermining our beliefs and the way we choose to raise our children.

I have no problem with them reading bible stories/. Stories from any other faith but, on our terms. I also feel like stories aimed at children about the bible come from angle that assumes it's true (naturally) which we do not.

We would be much happier with a non religious present or no present at all! Smile
