About tattoos?

Before I start I need to say I am quite heavily tattooed myself - albeit in places they can be hidden

I've read an article on Facebook today calling for a law to be passed stating people who are tattooed cannot be discriminated against in the world of work. AIBU to disagree with it?

People commenting on the article, and the article itself, say it's unfair people with neck, face and hand tattoos get turned down from jobs due to 'their expression of their personality' and think it's out dated and draconian that people who are capable of working get turned away

So AIBU to think if you want a professional job you either cover up or don't get tattooed in the first place?

I did explain my opinion. You just disregarded it.

itsbetterthanabox · 20/08/2014 11:50

Yes and I asked you to elaborate on something non sensical.

normalishdude · 20/08/2014 11:54

You found it nonsensical. I don't. Therein lies disagreement. There's no resolution to be had here. I won't respond further.

itsbetterthanabox · 20/08/2014 12:03

I asked you to explain yourself further. Again you have misunderstood the point of the thread and of debate in general if you won't explain you pov.

normalishdude · 20/08/2014 12:05

Yawn.

itsbetterthanabox · 20/08/2014 12:13

Anyway..
Heyho I see what you mean but then a lot of things make some people uncomfortable but because they shouldn't we don't pander. For example there are some people who are uncomfortable if they see women wearing trousers or having short hair or not wearing makeup but we wouldn't say don't do this so that they don't feel uncomfortable.

SignYourName · 20/08/2014 12:32

it's minimising genuine discrimination issues

This is my problem with it. I have no strong feelings about tattoos, I don't have any myself but I admire some on other people. However, ultimately they are a choice and since they are, or are intended to be, permanent, they should be the result of a considered choice and part of that consideration should be the way that visible tattoos are perceived, with an acknowledgement that choosing to have a visible tattoo may close off certain options to you while current attitudes prevail. I don't necessarily agree with those attitudes and in time, with the normalisation of tattoos in UK society, they are likely to change and possible professional impact can become less of a consideration when deciding whether or not to have a tattoo, but the current situation is what it is and it would be naive not to be aware of it before going under the needle.

Being a particular gender, being disabled, being of a certain ethnicity or having a particular sexual orientation - none of those things are choices and to include the result of entering into an entirely voluntary activity under the same umbrella of "discrimination" does not sit comfortably with me.

dont tattoo's on palms of hands tend to wear away pretty quickly?

Bunbaker · 20/08/2014 17:45

Not quickly enough for that idiot!

mumminio · 20/08/2014 18:00

Ridiculous law, hope it doesn't get passed.

FindoGask · 20/08/2014 19:01

I'm quite heavily tattooed and I think this would be a silly law for all the reasons already stated - it's clearly not going to get anywhere near parliament!

I have my back, one arm and half of another arm covered but when I'm dressed for work you would never ever know. Even if my place of work was OK with me showing my tattoos (and I think it probably would be), I feel more professional with them covered up.

itsbetterthanabox · 20/08/2014 19:10

The reason I those tats are bad though is because of their offensive content not the tattoo itself.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 20/08/2014 19:39

The dick sucka tattoo would be covered by clothes.

clam · 20/08/2014 19:54

We have a "no visible tattoos" policy where I work, but a newly-appointed colleague of mine turned up for an initiation day with quite a large one on her foot/ankle. Not sure if she's aware of the policy, but apart from in winter when wearing boots, I can't for the life of me see how she'll cover it.
