To go back to the hospital?

Sorry for posting here, the health boards are quiet and I am freaking out a little.

I went to a&e in an ambulance on Monday night after crippling abdo pain and vomiting, worse than labour, really really awful. They thought it might be my appendix, referred me to the surgeons who took 13 hours to see me and said it wasn't likely to be anything surgical and to come back the next morning for an ultrasound. The scan was clear, they told me it was probably something gynae and to wait until I see the consultant in September (I have just been referred by my gp for ?endometriosis)

It's now 6 days later and the pain is no better- I am on the max dose of codeine, anti-inflammatories and paracetamol which help but when they wear off I am once again at the writhing in pain and vomiting stage. I can only take them every 6 hours, they wear off after 4. Sad They sent me home with a vague 'it should get better in a few days'. Would I be unreasonable to go back in and make a massive fuss until they actually investigate properly and do something? I've just graduated medical school (but I'm not working yet so only sort of a doctor) so I never know whether I'm making myself anxious about the worst possibility or whether I really should go in. And our local hospital is horribly short staffed which doesn't give me much confidence.

Absolutely agree MrsWedgeAntilles. Hope you are doing ok OP.

MrsWedgeAntilles · 18/08/2014 10:04

So sorry for that post, OP, I am outraged on your behalf but I didn't want to sound as though I was berating you. I hope you are being cared for properly now.

TheReluctantCountess · 18/08/2014 10:23

I thought gallbladder too, but it could be any number of things. Hope they find out soon.

Debs334 · 18/08/2014 20:30

How are you doing Glabella? Any closer to diagnosis?

Pollywallywinkles · 18/08/2014 20:53

Why don't you go back to your GP or call out of hours if you need to be seen before you can get in touch with your GP tomorrow?

pieceoftoast · 18/08/2014 20:58

Do go back to hospital. Sounds possibly like PID. I had the same as you and it turned out to be PID, really damaged one of my tubes because they kept trying to tell me it was probably a wee infection!

Also, my friend has endometriosis and presented with pain like yours, she was dismissed again and again - it transpired she had an infection following a termination which exacerbated/was exacerbated by the endo.

Really hope you get it sorted.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 18/08/2014 21:07

I would go back, if I hadn't gone back after I was sent away being told I had ibs, I would be dead as my gallbladder ruptured.

So go to a&e and be totally truthful about how agonising it is and don't leave till they can find out what is wrong with you.

Glabella · 18/08/2014 21:53

Hi everyone, I'm home and feeling a little better. Turns out I had pyelonephritis (a kidney infection) and a chest infection, so no wonder I felt so utterly awful. No idea how they missed it the first time. I think I was just admitted last time as 'rule out appendicitis' and when they ruled it out than that was it. This time they actually got around to giving me some fluids and antibiotics and I think I'm on the mend, pain is much better and I have been up and about today.
I'm going private for my gynae referral, after all this my parents have offered to pay, so I see so,some early next week.

Thanks for making me go, my kidneys were not happy and I was so dehydrated I was ketotic, so I really really did need to go.

Debs334 · 18/08/2014 22:41

Goodness OP! You poor thing, so glad they finally realised what was wrong. Hopefully you'll be feeling much better in the next 24/48 hours.

ddubsgirl77 · 18/08/2014 23:36

Kidney infection sucks :( glad you sorted it as to the person how said appendix always shows up on a scan mine didnt!

x2boys · 18/08/2014 23:45

Go back n and make it known your a doctor its surprising how different staff treat you if they know you have some knowledge I,m a nurse and a mental health one at that so my physiology is sketchy but staff do treat you differently .when they know you have some medical or in my case nursing knowledge .

x2boys · 18/08/2014 23:46

Sorry op just read your last post glad you have got treatment .

Jjuice · 18/08/2014 23:47

My sister found me on the floor crying when I was 18 and took me to hospital they reckoned eptopic preg or appendicitis. .the test for appendicitis did not involve ultra sound back then...a gloved finger was all it took!! It turned out to be endometriosis and I had it cauterised about 6 months later..had no probs 20 odd years later.

Glad you took advice and went back. Where would we be without mumsnet. [Flowers]

TheysayIamparanoid · 19/08/2014 17:26
