To be shit scared of moving to burgess hill?

Movingfromlondontown · 17/08/2014 11:52

I've made the mistake of doing lots and lots of googling and came across a website BHU ( burgess hill uncovered ) and am now pretty scared!
W decided to leave London ( concrete end of Surrey ) to give the kids a better life, smaller schools etc and being near to the sea but am now really panicked by what people are saying its like there.
Any locals that can let me know what it's really like?

Haha at burgess hill uncovered. It's hardly Compton is it?

burgesshillmama · 03/09/2014 14:21

great post! @usuallykeepmyselftomyself

NedZeppelin · 03/09/2014 14:24

Which is the pub within walking distance of the Triangle then usually, I've missed that one but it sounds great? BHU full of school kids and wind up merchants, makes for amusing reading but should be taken with a pinch of salt. BH is fine, no worse than anywhere else and loads of beautiful countryside surrounding. Not really a 'suburb' though as mentioned above, a suburb of what?

Lessisboreinteriors · 03/09/2014 16:04

The Sportsman? That's the only one I can think off that's in the middle of the countryside and a short walk from The Triangle..

Pippa1234 · 03/09/2014 16:05

Hi I've moved here to burgess hill from Surbiton in Surrey because the house prices were cheaper! I heard bad things too but I didn't listen I love it here & schools are fab. We have a daughter she loves it & were 15 mins drive to the sea & beautiful stunning views of South Downs. The pubs are all children friendly with gardens!! Something you don't get in London! We love it & very happy. Good luck x

I worked in Burgess Hill for a few years and have several friends who live there.

It's absolutely fine, nothing to set the world alight but certainly not bad. The surrounding countryside is lovely. Plus very good schools.

The shopping is rubbish but as has already been said, you're 15 minutes from Brighton which has everything and about 35 minutes from London on the fast train.

PennyPinkleton · 03/09/2014 17:36

Ned, The Woolpack is the pub near the Triangle.
I moved to BH from Brighton 9 yrs ago and it is perfect for our family. Have made some great friends here, the schools are great and the shops, though just ok at the moment, are hopefully being updated (if the rumours are to be believed!)
Great parks, lots of great walks, pubs and the cinema is cheap and good fun for the kids.
HH may a bit "posher", but I will say this for BH, we don't have a 99p store Grin

usuallykeepmyselftomyself · 03/09/2014 17:52

the woolpack is lovely and they do LOADS of events for families as well as for grown ups but it was the sportsman I was referring to, maybe 15 minutes rather than 10 but so worth it, a great cycle destination as well - just far enough for the kids and off of all the main roads - carry on cycling on the old road up to Hickstead as well and then into Sayers Common for a drink at the Duke of York - another nice pub with garden....although I am starting to spot a theme here on my destinations of choice!

Johnogroats · 03/09/2014 17:55

A friend of mine lives there (moved from Yorks / Lincs 10 years ago) and loves it. I have visited and it seems fine, not the most exciting place, but nothing wrong with it.

NedZeppelin · 03/09/2014 18:48

The Sportsman, ah thanks usually. I know where that is and will certainly pay a visit, sounds lovely. Might even be able to walk/cycle from home...

clairesey76 · 03/09/2014 20:24

We moved from South London to Haywards Heath four years ago. It was the best move we have ever made. We regularly visit Burgess Hill for shopping. The kids prefer their library and they also go to gymnastics there. We live in a beautiful part of the world and I regularly think how lucky we are when driving via the countryside home from Brighton. You will be close to the seaside and also close to gorgeous countryside. I think you'll be very happy xx

npanne · 02/10/2014 11:47

Burgess Hill is fine - certainly nothing scary about it. As others have said, the schools are all good, and there's plenty of parks etc for the kids. The biggest negative about the place is that the shopping has suffered in recent years, and the town consists of charity shops, coffee shops, estate agents (I counted 20-odd a few months back) and takeaways (God there's a lot of takeaways).
One thing that people haven't really mentioned is that Burgess Hill, like most places, has some areas that are distinctly better than others - not exactly Kensington vs Brixton, but you get the idea.
Do you know the name of the road you're planning to move to, if you haven't already moved by now?

cricketpitch · 02/10/2014 12:02

When are you moving OP - I'd like to know how you got on

MrsPiggie · 02/10/2014 13:11

Small town so a bit boring coming from London, good transport links to Brighton and London, lovely countryside. Nothing special really but a very decent place to live. Why would you be scared?

mrsnibblesisahero · 17/01/2021 08:56

I'm from Burgess Hill (or Burgess Hope) as we used to refer to it Wink

Still there all the time (pre lockdown) to see my Dad. What the town lacks is more than made up for by its location.

I couldn't wait to leave at 18 but am secretly very fond of the place. And can see it as decent for young families now. In fact much better now than in the 80s I think, although we had a rather fabulous lido back then.

mrsnibblesisahero · 17/01/2021 09:06

That's Burgess Hole, not Hope

HikeForward · 17/01/2021 09:10

We visit friends who live there (up until lockdown anyway!)

It’s a nice little commuter town, good travel links, safe feel to it, lots of nice countryside and walks. High street is a bit dated and quaint but there are decent shops and restaurants. Lots of good schools.

bobbiester · 17/01/2021 09:12

What stories on BHU scared you?

This one?

"Car Parking Charges Could Be Set To Rise In Burgess Hill In New Review"

This one?

"Silver Sunday Gift Bags Delivered To Burgess Hill Residents"

Or maybe it was this terrifying one?

"Groundsman's Delight As Recreational Cricket Will Be Played In Burgess Hill"

Horsemad · 17/01/2021 09:16

Err, this is a ZOMBIE thread folks... 😆😆😆

Winterwoollies · 17/01/2021 13:53

I imagine op has settled in by now.

VestaTilley · 17/01/2021 13:57

It’s a nice suburban, fairly boring town. It’s fine. Don’t be idiotic OP. My DF was born there and it was a perfectly nice place to be a child.

And why would you move somewhere that you clearly haven’t researched?

MessAllOver · 17/01/2021 14:43

I've heard they don't speak English there but their own southern dialect. So you may need to hire an interpreter.

pepsicolagirl · 17/01/2021 14:48

could be worse, could be southwater...
