Can dh claim any benefits for 2 weeks unemployment?

Hi
Not sure where to post this, sorry...
dh's job ended on August 3rd and he starts his new job on 18th Aug. I'm a SAHM and with 3 kids we are going to struggle this month as he won't get paid until September. Can he get unemployment benefit for just 2 weeks? Or any other benefit? How does he go about that? Never been unemployed before so he really doesn't know how to go about this, thanks, any help appreciated

He may well have been able to but they only backdate with good reason he should really have claimed on the 3rd of August. Why won't he be paid a month after he finished his job ?

DaisyFlowerChain · 16/08/2014 20:22

He can't claim job seekers as he wasn't job seeking. Did he not have a payment when he left?

Myrandomfamily · 16/08/2014 20:24

Not all jobs pay monthly people ...

ilovesooty · 16/08/2014 20:29

Will he be paid at the end of September? When was his final-payment from his previous job?

jammyjamjam · 16/08/2014 20:29

He got paid on the 4th Aug when he finished his last job. He starts a completely new job on Mon 18th so surely he can claim something for those 2 weeks when he hasn't been working?

No, not necessarily if he was between jobs rather than seeking a job. The claim also takes about 3weeks to process, too, even for co tributes based, which is what he would likely have been eligible for.

ilovesooty · 16/08/2014 20:32

Is there any reason why he didn't submit a claim immediately?

gamerchick · 16/08/2014 20:33

Well it depends on how often he got paid. If he got paid on the 4th and he got paid fortnightly then I would doubt that he would be entitled to anything as that money is supposed to last the 2 weeks. As he starts a new job after those 2 weeks then he won't get anything at all as he's not available for work.

You're best off ringing the jobcentre on Monday and asking I think.

ilovesooty · 16/08/2014 20:35

Yes, expat hasa point. There's every likelihood that he would be paid in his new job before any eligible claim was processed. That's why I wondered why he hadn't claimed straight away.

gordyslovesheep · 16/08/2014 20:37

honestly if he had a job - left/handed in his notice then started a new job (he already had lined up) 2 weeks later then their is not a cat in hells chance

why not ask the benefits agency?

jammyjamjam · 16/08/2014 20:42

Tbh honest he didn't claim immediately because he didn't think about it and neither did I. I was talking to a friend about this and she suggested checking whether he could claim anything.
Btw I got it a bit wrong....his last salary was July 23rd which means that he will get paid for 10 days work this month which is better than nothing. We'll manage somehow but I just thought I'd check our options, he has been contributing for years and it's the first time he's had a period of not being employed so surely he's entitled to something? Maybe not who knows, it all sounds complicated...

jammyjamjam · 16/08/2014 20:45

he had a contract for a few years which he knew was ending on the 4Aug, so he's been looking for something for months. He got the new job mid July but with a start date of the 18th Aug...does that mean he's not entitled to anything?

WoodliceCollection · 16/08/2014 20:48

No, they're not going to give you anything (maybe a hardship loan at best but that might take weeks to go through, god knows). Sorry, hope you make it through ok (I had to take a week off last month for chicken pox dd2, unpaid obviously, no other family around and her dad is a useless bastard, it does really screw with budget etc but you have to just cover it somehow, there is no help for short term loss of income unless you get private insurance maybe).

JoanBakersShopCake · 16/08/2014 20:50

Probably not. They will ask what he did to find other (temporary) jobs in that time and why he didn't claim earlier.

ilovesooty · 16/08/2014 20:50

If he got the new job mid July I doubt if they would pay JSA and backdate it as he wasn't actively job seeking. You might get an NI payment for the missing two weeks.

Primadonnagirl · 16/08/2014 20:51

Not worth it...he can't backdate without good reason and they don't pay for first three days anyway...sorry too late

AbsolutelyCrushed · 16/08/2014 20:55

Hardship loans don't exist any more, they are handed out from local councils in the form of food stamps.

jammyjamjam · 16/08/2014 20:56

Thanks, that's all really helpful. Sounds like he's not entitled to anything, which is a shame as it's not his fault that they wanted him to start on the 18th and not earlier.
Will look into getting NI payment for the 2 weeks. Thanks all x

you might be entitled to tax credits - have you tried putting your figures into a benefits calculator? Personally I would phone the jobcentre number explain that he's been out of work since 4 aug and that he's been job seeking since and ask if it can be backdated.

jammyjamjam · 16/08/2014 20:59

Ah tax credits! Will look into that thanks

but he's been at home with the children on school holidays I suspect.

No jobseeking. :)

jammyjamjam · 16/08/2014 21:02

No he wasn't job seeking as he found a job whilst he was still employed, the only thing is that he couldn't start immediately, they wanted him on the 18th and not before
