Well, lavender. A little bunch.

But it made me smile that she was stood there breathing in how delicious it is.

And there's loads out there but D2 is shocked and horrified.

But if it was something like roses I might have objected.

D2 is outraged.

But why don't I mind? And would I mind it it was something fancy like a dhalia?

Not making any sense am I. Sorry.

Well, I suppose it was still stealing but if she'd knocked at your front door, she would have been pleased that you said Yes and you'd have been pleased that she'd asked and that you made her happy.

ADHDNoodles · 16/08/2014 18:49

For me it would depend on the age of the child. If it was an innocent gesture, I wouldn't care. Though I'd hope the parent would correct the behavior.

I did this when my parents took me on walks. Or I'd wander off and bring back a flower from my neighbor's garden for our house. I don't think the neighbors did much more than chuckle.

Optimist1 · 16/08/2014 18:52

I think lavender's OK because taking a few sprigs doesn't really detract from the overall look of your garden. Roses definitely not! Dahlias would serve her right if they were full of earwigs (flowers of the devil IMO)!

ValerieTheVodkaFairy · 16/08/2014 18:56

Oh, I don't know. I would crack if it was a rose, too. But lavender is so lovely, and there's so much of it, and it's hard to resist Smile and if it was only a teeny bit..

AtYourCervix · 16/08/2014 18:59

It was an adult not child. Share the loveliness.....

I agree with sharing the loveliness. Most of the lavender in my garden was taken as cuttings from my Dad's garden, so it has lovely connotations now he's no longer with us. I remember once worrying that it was starting to bush out across one of the paths and he told me that's all the better because as you walk past it you brush the fragrance into the air. Aah...

CarbeDiem · 16/08/2014 19:19

I often want to take a small piece of lavender or even some pine tree because I love the smells but I never do.
Perhaps I would if I knew the owners were like you Atyour

I wouldn't mind someone taking a few sprigs out of my garden.

antimatter · 16/08/2014 19:21

I often stop by and smell flowers in people's front gardens. Or lilac. Or lavender.

Never pick it up.

MissMilbanke · 16/08/2014 19:22

God I bet this was my mil ...

AtYourCervix · 16/08/2014 19:25

Maybe i should pin up a little note.

'Please pick a bunch'

At what point should i pick it to dry and then turn into little bag things?

I also have a pretty magnificent magnolia 8n flower. It smells utterly divine.

ICanSeeTheSun · 16/08/2014 19:37

I think that if everyone took a little bunch then the bush would go quickly.

TheHouseofMirth · 16/08/2014 19:41

I think it's lovely that rather than getting outraged at someone "stealing" from you, you can take pleasure from observing somebody else's pleasure.

You should actually pick and dry them as soon as flowers are out (or if you can bear to, a little before they open properly)

AtYourCervix · 16/08/2014 19:44

Bit late now then?

OP posts:
TheHouseofMirth · 16/08/2014 19:46

No, not at all but the fragrance lasts a bit longer if you do it then. Just chop off the stems and put it in a paper bag or cardboard box on a layer of newspaper somewhere warmish and dry and bob's your uncle.

hormonalandneedingcheese · 16/08/2014 19:46

It's lavender, it can grow like weeds sometimes unlike bloody difficult Roses. It would have been nice if she'd asked though. Get you D2 to mind the bushes with supersoaker in hand! :)

LucasNorthCanSpookMeAnytime · 16/08/2014 19:47

I once found a complete stranger picking loads of plums from my tree! One as you're passing, fine, but they had brought a carrier bag with them!

AtYourCervix · 16/08/2014 19:47

I might do some harvesting tomorrow then.
