This PMT is going to kill me. Wibu to just smash something?!

Every four weeks, this absolutely cripples me for a few days. I overheat, cry at the slightest thing and feel irrationally angry all the time.

The worst thing is the deep depression I seem to sink in during the last two or three days before I come on. Along with ginormous painful boobs, I don't feel like life is worth living right now.

I went on antidepressants when I was recovering from anorexia but the side effects make me dopey, not great at work!

Help!!

Oil of evening primrose works for me :)

suziepra · 16/08/2014 10:45

A hot bath, red wine and a pizza or two always fixes me

Bettercallsaul1 · 16/08/2014 10:56

OP, I totally sympathise with this - I used to suffer from terrible PMT too. Your hormones get completely out of kilter and leave you feeling bleak and hopeless for several days every month. (I think it's the sudden plummeting in oestrogen levels before menstruation.) Every month, I would honestly think that life wasn't worth living, only to find that my mood picked up dramatically a week later and life was good again. There was no rationality in it - just a purely chemical imbalance. If it's any consolation, it got much better as I got older - after having my children, the mood swings become much less marked. I would speak to your GP and see if he/she can suggest any solutions.

ValerieTheVodkaFairy · 16/08/2014 11:06

Me too. It's hateful, utterly hateful. As time goes on, I find I can manage it better, but still. It's just horrible. You can't really tell anyone either. I once mentioned to my mum how bad I got it, and she just gave me the spiel about it only being a period, every woman gets them, you can't expect the world to revolve around you just because you are menstruating, blah blah. Needless to say, she doesn't get PMT, at least not to the extent I do, where I spend at least 24 hours a month wondering what the point of my existence is

Grapeeatingweirdo · 16/08/2014 11:59

Thanks for your replies. Boyfriend is on holiday with his daughter and I wish it hadn't coincided with this week. It's like a black pit of emptiness and hopelessness.

Really appreciate your replies! I'm going to try the evening primrose.

How to get through the weekend...

I'm sorry your mum isn't supportive Valerie

It's worth going to a GP as there are a variety of things that can help. Lifestyle can make a lot of difference (lots of exercise, very little sugar) and I have had a lot of success recently with a combination of evening primrose oil and vitamin B complex.

By "a lot of success", I mean that I still feel shit but I can get out of bed and do stuff, albeit grumpily, with a dodgy stomach and achy boobs and don't spend several days a month crying under the bedclothes thinking about dying or spending money I don't have and the rest of the months trying to tidy up the mess and put right all the stupid things I've done while premenstrual.

VSeth · 16/08/2014 12:16

Star flower supplement is v good. Also try some exercise? Some thing angry like running or boxing e

Booner · 16/08/2014 12:26

I really recommend evening primrose oil and Magnesium OK together. The magnesium ok has the b vitamins included. It has made a massive difference to me (and the rest of the family!) each month.
Hope you can find something which works for you

dolphinsandwhales · 16/08/2014 13:39

Yanbu. I never used to get bad pmt until my 30s, now I get it terribly and become angry, argumentative, cry over anything. I dont have a solution, reading with interedt thougg in case others do!

ValerieTheVodkaFairy · 16/08/2014 14:34

Molly is right about the evening primrose. When I took starflower & a multivit, and ate less sugar, I coped a lot better too. I don't know why I didn't keep it up. It makes it manageable.

I am usually quite a laid back, even keel sort of person, and I am very easily contented. However a combination of the implant/getting the implant taken out/unsuccessfully TTC has sent my PMT into absolute overdrive. This month I was twisted with rage at just about everything. My beautiful skinny friend and her bikini clad holiday pics, my other friend's new car, someone else's new job. Like I wanted to put my head through a plate of glass, the unfairness of it all.

Honestly, it's like I'm possessed by Satan for two days every month, I'm just horrible.

ihatethecold · 16/08/2014 14:53

I'm on the mini pill for pmt and painful periods.
It's made a huge difference.
No more pmt or periods.
Result!

ocelot41 · 16/08/2014 15:33

Me too. Vitamin B complex helps - a bit...

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/08/2014 17:41

As ihate says, can you not go on hormonal contraceptives? I used to be on microgynon (it's now contraindicated for me, boo!) and it was bliss.

upthedamnwotsit · 16/08/2014 17:54

I'm not sure which of them did it, but I started taking codliver oil and Vitamin B complex I noticed my period became a lot easier. It wasn't even why I began using them! There was a definite change and it was a very pleasant side-effect.

steff13 · 16/08/2014 18:03

I have PMDD, Premenstrual Dysorphic Disorder. I take Zoloft for it. It's helped a lot. It was impossible to manage before the Zoloft.

Why do you call it PMT? We call it PMS, Premenstrual Syndrome. What does the T stand for?

gamerchick · 16/08/2014 18:05

Tension

This forum always has me on the uk google servers to see what people are talking about. Grin

MollyBdenum · 16/08/2014 19:10

If you have PMDD (which I have, and which it sounds like the OP has) hormonal contraceptives usually make it worse.

TheWeather · 16/08/2014 19:18

Yup deep, deep depression for 24 hours ish 1-2 days befor I start. I even recognise it now, but am so deep in there that I can't even begin to pull myself out of it. It seems to be getting worse as well...

To those who take supplements how often and when?

ItWasMyOwnSilence · 16/08/2014 19:23

Following an endometrisis diet can really help with the symptoms of PMT, however it's pretty limited and grim.

Mummytoagorgeouschops · 16/08/2014 19:28

Sympathise completely. People joke about PMT but I think it's a serious, underrated condition.

I've punched walls, broken cups/plates etc due to PMT. I'm usually so easy going and slow to anger but I am like a different person at that certain time of month. I get anxious and irritable because I know its impending and wind myself up even more - it's quite simply awful! It affected relationships and friendships and my career!

Evening primrose helped me and vitamin B complex. Hope you find some useful advice. I too will be following this threa with anticipation

ValerieTheVodkaFairy · 16/08/2014 19:39

Hormonal contraception makes it worse for me. It spins it out for longer, and it is a lot more intense. I'm planning never to go on pills etc ever again, I would rather bleed constantly on the coil, or get sterilised

Siolence · 16/08/2014 19:50

I was just popping on to say PMDD but am pleased to see others who have suggested it. I run many packs of Marvelon together. It's a Monophasic pill so the level of hormones is stable - does the trick, but does dull the urge! I figure I'd rather be stable than lying under the covers convinced I am a waste of skin and everything in the world is awful. Zinc and B6 too. All helps.

mizu · 16/08/2014 20:30

Magnesium OK or Magnesium B is good for helping a bit - and also seems to help the absolutely awful tiredness I get the week before my period.

If you are iron deficient then that will impact too.

Cut out sugar - I have said this on these threads before, it is not easy, I cut down the TWO weeks before my period as I can't cut completely and it does improve mood.

I try to rest a lot if I can - hard as I am a teacher - but going to bed earlier a week before helps too.

I cannot take any hormonal contraception and so have the copper coil and very heavy periods. I also get terrible headaches before and start of period and a couple of days after.

It gets worse, I think, as you get older. It is shit.
