To change a brand new kitchen

Agggghast · 13/08/2014 09:53

I am in the process of moving, my house is under offer so I need to find somewhere quickly. Yesterday I saw a lovely house which would suit me perfectly except the kitchen is completely wrong for me, style, colour and layout. However it is brand new and clearly expensive and I feel guilty at even thinking about it. I am downsizing so cost isn't a problem but the friends in real life seemed to think I was being idiotic.

Don't think it's U at all, you can afford to, so why not!

londonrach · 13/08/2014 10:00

If you have the money why not. You could maybe resell the new kitchen you don't like on gumtree

Marmiteandjamislush · 13/08/2014 10:02

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge is on Mumsnet. Tell the world! Grin

Bouttimeforwine · 13/08/2014 10:03

Yes sell it. Buyer dismantles.

MrsWinnibago · 13/08/2014 10:21

YANBU. Your friends don't really think it ridiculous, they're jealous.

Agggghast · 13/08/2014 10:21

Thanks you are much kinder than my friends, they seemed to think that the only reason I didn't like a high gloss kitchen is because I am too idle to keep it looking glossy!

Oh yes defo sell it. My sister bought a beautiful kitchen on Gumtree recently...similar story! The seller had moved into a new home and hated the kitchen...tried to live with it for a year but couldn't get over it, my sister was thrilled with it.

CaptChaos · 13/08/2014 10:26

High gloss kitchens are ace, as long as you never cook in them.

Buy the house, carefully remove the kitchen and get one in your style and to your specs put in.

I sometimes think the Germans have it right, when you buy a house, it won't come with a kitchen fitted, and sometimes not even a bath!

HannerHet · 13/08/2014 10:29

YANBU. It's not like your going to throw it in a skip. Sell it and get a new one you like.

CalamitouslyWrong · 13/08/2014 10:32

White high gloss kitchens are surprisingly easy to live with. We never polish ours and it looks clean even when it isn't. Small people's fingerprints etc are not an issue. I think the coloured versions (and particularly black ones) are harder to keep looking good.

If you don't like the kitchen, change it. It's easy to sell them on.

8angle · 13/08/2014 10:36

It's your home - have it how you want it! agree with others who said sell it, the nasty side of me says tell your friends you just scrapped it because it wasn't expensive enough.... but your house keeper would have been happy to keep it glossy... Grin

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/08/2014 10:40

Would changing the doors and sides be an option?

KnackeredMuchly · 13/08/2014 10:41

Yanbu! Your home be happy

UselessNess · 13/08/2014 10:54

Any chance of a picture of the kitchen?

however · 13/08/2014 11:04

Yeah, couldn't possibly comment. Need a picture!

wfrances · 13/08/2014 11:13

id change it, if you can afford it.
we bought a house with a brand new bathroom
i hate everything about it
tiles , toilet , sink , taps ,bath and shower.
we will redo it ,but it will be the last room.

User54565644578 · 13/08/2014 11:21

I sold my kitchen on ebay and actually got a lot of money for it! Take nice photos while it is in-situ, give all measurements and spec of units really clearly. Make it clear buyer must dismantle and transport it themselves.

What you make will prob cover most of your new kitchen Grin

northlight · 13/08/2014 13:21

Could you live with the layout if you just changed the doors and drawer fronts?

JudysPriest · 13/08/2014 13:26

You can afford it, you want it, why not?

I'd suggest what Hooray did, sell or donate if you have the time to do so.

bigTillyMint · 13/08/2014 13:30

If you can afford it, then do what you want! Maybe your friend is jealous?

Agggghast · 13/08/2014 13:32

I don't think my friends were jealous more they thought the idea of me polishing a kitchen hilarious, I was so happy when shabby became chic!

You're moving so your new home should be what you want if you can afford what you want, have it. Definitely don't feel guilty because the alternative is being in my situation.

Last time we moved we had a newly built house. It took 12 years to rid ourselves of a bathroom that we both hated but couldn't justify changing because it was new. We still have the kitchen and there's no chance of it ever being changed. It's an expensive one and there's lots of it. It was never to my taste although at least I don't hate it. As with gloss kitchens, a lot of people like what we have, it's just not what either of us prefer.

Next time we're not compromising, we'll be having what suits us come hell or high water.

You can definitely sell the kitchen that's in the house so start planning to do it before you chicken out.

Move in and give it a go. If its too much like hard work, get a new one!

Agggghast · 13/08/2014 15:59

BigTilly that might work but it is burgundy and cream and I have red hair and it clashes terribly!

PogoBob · 13/08/2014 16:53

YANBU but please sell it on second hand rather than binning it. Would be a real shame (and wasteful IMHO) to add a nearly new kitchen to landfill Smile
