So worried that DH is going to lose his job

I have posted on here about my DH and his depression which has reached crisis point. He has been off work now 5 weeks, and has been told by GP that there is no way he can allow him to go back to work as he suffers with severe depression. He is also waiting to see neurologist about his myoclonic jerks/seizures which could be weeks away. Its looking increasing likely that the citalopram was the cause of this, Venlafaxine also brought them on after 4 days of treatment.
He has started on a new med which is going to make him drowsy and he drives for his job anyway so I know that there is nothing we can do.
I am so worried though. He has a long term sickness meeting at home tomorrow so we will see what they say.
I just don't know what we will do if he loses his job. This is really life changing and I am struggling to get my head around it all to be honest.

I'm not clued up on employment law but I am on depression. As you will know meds take up to six weeks to kick in and many have unpleasant side effects. However once the correct med and dose are found these can be incredibly effective.

Five weeks is a very short time to be off work, given the nature of his illness. Recovery in my experience is slow but his health is so much more important than any job. I would check with citizens advice or a mental health charity re his position with his employer as i am sure it will depend on the terms of his contract length of service etc. The company may be able to offer additional support in terms of therapy etc.

I hope that your DH is receiving therapy along with his meds. Also, there are many things he can do practically that will lessen the symptoms and help him cope. HE WILL RECOVER as I have many times. The mental health and employment threads are very very good on here.

Similar happened to my DH, he was off work sick for 5 months before he left, his employer took him through capability procedures (had to prove he was not capable of doing the job due to illness) He then got ESA for a while, before he started his new job - this whole procedure took over a year, so you don't need to panic. Just to add to the mix we had just taken on a bigger mortgage on a doer-upper house, and (unplanned) gone from 2 to 3 DC. Now I work FT and he works PT and does a lot of the childcare for DS3.

Also see if he can see a Occupational Health Mental Health worker, either through his employer or an independent one. Ours was flagged up by our Dr's surgery. They will look at how his work is affecting his MH, and how his MH is affecting his work.

Good luck, you will both get through it and out the other end, eventually!
