to spend this much money on myself...

I've been offered a lift to Edinburgh and free accomodation for a long bank holiday weekend, so i just need spending money and a train ticket home. Just went to book my ticket and its 140!!!

I was already feeling a bit bad as it would mean leaving my 3 young DC for 5 days (I've never been away longer then 1 night before, although when I'm at work they don't barely see me for 3 days running, but I'm about!)

Also its the summer holidays, I have 2 lots of school uniform to buy and would like to give them a good holidays and a few nights away if poss. I won't be able to take them away if I go gallavanting off to the fringe festival by myself!

So, should I go, or save the money to spend on the whole family?

Have you tried megabus, we get train tickets to London for £1.

LadySybilLikesCake · 12/08/2014 22:39

Try Megatrain.com Smile They don't go to all stations so you may need to be creative.

The ends of the earth apparently! West Mids actually. The galling thing is my friend booked hers just over an hour before I went to do mine and it was less then half that. What the fook happened in that hour?!

Delete your cookies and browser history, sometimes when there are multiple searches for the same website it pushes the price up.

theendoftheendoftheend · 12/08/2014 22:50

Thankyou I've cleared browser and cookies and checked those sites but its still coming back as the same price Sad

try train line or megabus or look into a railcard possibly. that price is too much.

ColdCottage · 12/08/2014 22:56

Try splitting the ticket. There is an ap called Tickertysplit or something like that - by Martin moneysaver website.

My sis saved loads doing this going to Cornwall. You just need to make sure they all have the same restrictions and the train stops where you are changing over tickets. Also avoid going via London as pushes price up.

Mylovelylovelyhorse · 12/08/2014 22:56

Tickety split? It's a moneysavingexpert thingy

ICanSeeTheSun · 12/08/2014 22:58

www.takethetrain.co.uk/apps/WebObjects/TTT.woa/wo/0.0

Just found one £49

ColdCottage · 12/08/2014 22:58

Yes to railcard. There is a new one for couples to save a 1/3, not sure if you always have to travel together though, same with family rail card. At least u cab use it again and u will probably save more than the 30 pounds it costs.

Are you just looking at singles? Go on Trainline.com and search for both single journey and return journeys ... sometimes you can get a return cheaper than a single when it's short notice.

theendoftheendoftheend · 13/08/2014 00:00

Thanks all I've just booked the ticket for £70 and in a weeks time will be off on my first non-child orientated adventure in 6 years! It wouldn't have happened without your help, thankyou again! Flowers

(takethetrain.co.uk was a godsend thankyou ICanSee )

Enjoy your break :)

We (3 adults 2 children) are going to Gatwick and according to the usual rail planner site the return trip will cost £107.60. Reading the thread and hoping for a bargain I just checked the cost in 'Take the Train' and they want £144.60.

Proudmary67 · 13/08/2014 08:29

Have a great trip Edinburgh's amazing

aprilanne · 13/08/2014 08:34

go onto national rail they are the cheapest .get advanced fares.from now until 48hrs before travel .i got from scotland to blackpool for £12

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 13/08/2014 08:56

I see the OP has got a ticket, but if she is going south from Edinburgh, it is likely that she will be using East Coast, which are very expensive.

The cheap tickets go on sale 3 months in advance and can sell out in hours.

£70 on yourself!? I've just been I thought greedy and ordered some Estee Lauder perfume on line for £38 and took it that I was being extravagant. It's the first time I've ever bought myself what I thought was posh perfume. I usually make do with Aldi or 99p Shop if no one else buys me any.

I hope you enjoy yourself. Now that you've spent some money on yourself, you won't feel so bad next time.

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 13/08/2014 09:09

We usually take a plane, it's only about £40 each way.
