To think Christmas is what you make it?

Now it's on it's way I keep hearing the same people moaning about Christmas, along the lines of "seeing family that you hate, same songs, Sprouts...ect"

Surely you should just spend time with family you care about and not eat sprouts!

It's what you make of it that counts

Oh and a few friends and I have booked tickets on the Polar Express - just Mums and some of the DCs from DD's class at school. We are all going to wear PJs aswell - soooo looking forward to it!!

I love Christmas and am always amazed by the number of threads where posters are saying they have to spend the holidays with people they hate. It's like they think they have no free will or something.

I love sprouts too!!

YABU - Christmas for some people is a sad time of year.....for me it highlights how small our family is - there is me, DH and DS and that's it. My mum is dead, both DH's parents and his brother are dead, my dad and Dsis spend xmas in Spain so for me xmas day is the same as any other Sunday really but a bit more depressing - had a good old cry last year thinking how cheated I feel, how it was so much nicer years ago when the family was bigger.

No matter what I make of it, it ain't ever great, I just muddle on best I can so DS at least has a nice day.

Ilove and Betty, I understand how you feel our family has been severely depleted due to death and fall out and divorce too, but even so, you can choose to make it fun. I have spent a good few xmases alone.
If I know something challenging is coming up I take steps to ease the situation before hand.

PumpkinPie2013 · 12/08/2014 15:33

I enjoy Christmas but I do realise that for a lot of people it is a difficult and lonely time Sad

My mum used to work in a hospital where people used to make up illnesses on Christmas eve so they could stay Sad

ilovesooty I'm sorry that you also find Christmas lonely Sad

My SIL lost her dad (aged just 60) last Christmas day Sad she will make an effort her children but I doubt she'll really feel like celebrating.

So, yes nice of you have people to spend it with but not otherwise.

fluffyraggies · 12/08/2014 15:38

Xmas can be tricky when you've got shared DCs with an XH too. Who thinks he can go all year being a half arsed father and then have the DCs on Xmas day! ShockAngry

squoosh · 12/08/2014 15:39

Sprouts stir fried with cumin are the shizz. Oh and also with pancetta and maple syrup.

I'm ignoring the Christmas part of the post.

Ericaequites · 12/08/2014 15:45

I've started working on Christmas presents already. I think we'll all go to my sister's this year, as my mother has early dementia. Last year, it was all too much for her. She wouldn't let me start cooking, but wouldn't start herself. My BIL did all the cooking.

Skychangesky · 12/08/2014 22:29

It would be nice if everyone could accept that not everyone loves Christmas! I like it but my parents are dead and I've no one to spend it with, although I had a baby in June so will have her this year.

The thing is everyone tries to get me to spend Christmas with them and i don't WANT to!

Refuse to discuss Christmas in August.

This whole thread is BU Wink

Spending Christmas Day in New York this year so we can all be with DH as his company has put him in New York the whole of November until 28th December. Can't wait to do a bit of shopping with DDs! Already received a letter ready to be posted for Santa Claus from DS2 (he's already sealed it without showing it too me so I'm waiting until all kids are out before reopening it). Honestly can't wait for Christmas this year.
