to think the standard of restaurant food in England is, in general, very low?

I love eating out. When I lived in Ireland I did it all the time. My home town is very small compared to English towns (though big in Irish terms!) and it had a wide range of excellent restaurants and pubs that served really really good food. Not cheap, but excellent quality and well worth what you pay for it.

Here I find the quality of food is really poor. It's very easy to eat out cheaply here but very hard to find somewhere that does really good food. I live in the East Midlands and it is exceptionally hard to find a restaurant that just does simple food but to a very good standard. For example the pub near where I used to work in Ireland did delicious homemade vegetable soup with homemade bread and gorgeous toasties on homemade bread as their lunch menu. Nothing at all fancy but very high quality and always done to perfection. Here, I can't find anything nearly similar and quite a few times, even in expensive restaurants, I've had food that wasn't cooked properly or just wasn't very appetising. Today we paid £34 for two very basic burgers that were served with frozen chips and tesco-standard coleslaw along with a very tiny children's meal. For that money in Ireland (generally) you would be guaranteed that everything would be very high quality, including handmade chips and coleslaw, frozen or packet stuff just wouldn't be acceptable.
Is it just that I live in a bad area for restaurants or is this just general thing around England?

Most chains offer crap food. Pub chains are cheap as chips and fine if that is what you want.

Independents may be more expensive but usually are better quality.

Food is generally is ok. however the service in some places leaves a lot to be desired and the price of stuff can be extortionate. Chain restaurant child's meal of pasta with tomato sauce £4.50 and was gone in one tablespoon.

The best place for soup I have found is Ikea.

We are vegetarian and the choice is quite limited.

Also the disparity in price between meals can leave a bad taste in ones mouth.

Once ordered a child's menu item and the same meal in adult size.

The child's meal arrived served as a small bowl of pasta. Cost £4.50
Adults meal arrived, the same small bowl of pasta + an eggcup with 2 cucumber sticks, 1/8 of a tomato and 1 leaf of lettuce. Cost £8.50

I complained and was told I had got a really big portion.

I'm in Leicestershire, and there are excellent Indian restaurants in Leicester for insanely little money. Would also recommend The Marquess of Exeter in Lyddington in Rutland and The Olive Branch in Clipsham, also in Rutland. I agree there's a lot of mediocre to bad stuff. My part of Ireland has some of the best cooking I've eaten anywhere - and I'm not the only one to think so, lots of awards etc - but I do know where to go, and several places are run or supplied by friends and acquaintances.

talcum I agree, the olive branch is great.

This www.indiannights.org/ is the best Indian place I've ever been to. I've only tried the takeaways (They have takeaways/restaurants in W.Bridgford, Radcliffe, Keyworth). The food is much better quality than most takeaways and they're not really oily and greasy.
I haven't found a good chippy in the East Midlands yet, I'm originally from up North by the sea and the chippys are so much better up there.

Quick tip that was given to me. When researching pubs, any that do "food served all day" are probably serving microwaved/combi-ovened food which is bought in. Those which do food between set times are more likely to be doing better food. This isn't an infallible test and you still need to do lots of research. The menus are also sometimes a bit of a giveaway. To be honest I avoid most pub food places as they are pretty shit.

I agree that the food available in Ireland always seems to be much fresher/better quality.
