Ok slightly drunk as DH is home very early and is getting up with DC.

I am watching a film called The Butler which is about the civil rights movement, I have also seen Mary Poppins in a new light with the mother protesting about women rights. There have been men who have had to fight for equal rights to their children.

There is still people in this world who have to still get treated as a person.

So my question is is there a group out there who has not had to fight

"Able bodied white male straight landowners, as a class, although no doubt there were societal pressures that left individuals within that class feeling they didn't have a choice on certain matters."

Nope, they fought for their rights, as documented by the Magna Carta for example. Notwithstanding the fact that for centuries their position in society was determined by actual fighting!

These days, the super-rich fight for their "right" to maintain and increase wealth to the detriment of wider society. Surely it's just a facet of the human condition.

Saying rich white women were better off than poor men is a massive generalisation. Women generally married, as to be unmarried was shameful and carried considerable stigma. But legally in England and Wales, your husband owned his wife.

So if you had a good Husband, you could have a good life. If you had an abusive Husband who raped and beat you, you usually had no redress, however wealthy you were on paper. Rape in marriage was totally legal, and most people viewed a Husband beating up his wife as a private matter that others should not interfere in. Private asylums were also often used by rich Husbands, to dispose of wives they no longer wanted. Rich women would be incarcerated and not allowed to leave unless their Husbands agreed.

So a rich women's life could be good, or could be a living hell.

That is why the fight to have abuse in marriage taken seriously has been so important. And remember it isn't as simple as saying a rich woman should leave her Husband. Until relatively recently, the Husband would automatically get custody of children who were not breastfeeding. And many mothers would be afraid to leave an abusive man, if it meant leaving their children behind with him.
