I've not long moved and am having a housewarming. Problem is I'm a bit broke. WIBU to serve boxed wine in a carafe so no one knows?

Erm I've never NOT served boxed wine at a party! Have I been doing a mahoosive faux pas all along???

ICanSeeTheSun · 09/08/2014 20:26

People will not know the difference, unless they are wine experts.

MehsMum · 09/08/2014 20:28

Er, wot? If you have recently moved, people expect you to be a bit skint.

Plus, we've been in this house for years and I think all our regular guests know that the mulled wine is made with the stuff out of boxes (and Co-op own brand brandy). No one complains and they all keep right on coming and knocking back the cheap booze Grin

MrsKCastle · 09/08/2014 20:30

Yanbu. People expect to bring a bottle to a housewarming anyway- if they don't like what you serve they'll drink their own.

NickNackNooToYou · 09/08/2014 20:31

I always take at least one bottle to any party, if your friends don't bring booze - get new friends Wink

RedToothBrush · 09/08/2014 20:41

Its booze.

Its free.

If they complain they are miserable fuckers!

As long as you are happy drinking it then your guests would be rude if they had a problem with it. They can always bring their own otherwise.

BabyGoose · 09/08/2014 20:46

I was going to say the same as RedToothBrush.
Can I come? I'll drink boxed wine and have fun. I'll also being you a bottle of something nice that you can squirrel away and have when you've settled in.

BolshierAyraStark · 09/08/2014 20:49

Boxed or bottled-wine is wine, YANBU.

Dolly80 · 09/08/2014 20:50

Why bother decanting it? The best bit about a box of wine is pressing the little tap button to get a drink Smile

Icelollycraving · 09/08/2014 20:51

Don't worry,as long as there's wine,I'm in.

EarthWindFire · 09/08/2014 20:54

Can't see an issue at all...

Do check it's not cheaper if you buy the same wine in bottles, sometimes it is especially if they have 3 bottles for £10 or a similar offer.

PedantMarina · 09/08/2014 22:33

Ahem, ...

YABU, but mainly/only if you've been able to find boxed stuff for cheaper than I have found (equiv to £4.50/bottle for weak-ass shit) and haven't shared your knowledge with us ...

HSMMaCM · 09/08/2014 22:33

I put the box out. Don't worry about decanting it

RedToothBrush · 09/08/2014 22:43

As it goes, do you know how they import most wine into the UK? They ship it in huge bags - like the insides of boxed wine - because its cheaper to transport and there is less wastage from damage. Then then bottle it here.

So anyone who is really snobby about wine, better be aware of where their wine is actually bottled...

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 10/08/2014 01:30

So much easier with boxes. The last time we had a party we had a box of rose, Malbec and Chardonnay. Put them on the mantle piece with a box of glasses next to it and left folk to it. Whether they liked it or not only the Chardonnay had any left in it the next day. I go by dh's parents. If they drink boxed wine then it must be ok. :o
