to not know what to say to my Israeli neighbours?

Just that really. I live abroad and they live in the house next to us (not in Israel) Get on quite well. Our gardens are very close to each other so we see each other constantly through out the day.

I've never given the whole situation much thought (to my discredit) but having spent the summer at home, I have been shocked and stunned and deeply saddened by the latest developments in Gaza. I know it's not directly their fault, but at the same time I just can't get past what the Israeli government is doing.

So, AIBU to be angry with them personally? Because I am angry with them. I'm angry about the whole situation.

Thanks

Wtf? This can't be serious.

PittTheYounger · 08/08/2014 15:38

Unless your neighbour is Reuven Rivlin or Benjamin Netanyahu you are being ridiculous.

lol

Andrewofgg · 08/08/2014 15:39

Try Shalom. It means peace and is used for Hello, good morning, how are you, etc. Stress on the second syllable.

PittTheYounger · 08/08/2014 15:39

I dont normally talk politics to my neighbours? do you all?

SirChenjin · 08/08/2014 15:39

Is this an example of the infamous 'professionally offended of MN'?

Unless they are firing rockets at Gaza, or calling for the death of all Palestinians I think you would do well to keep your outrageous thoughts about your neighbours to yourself.

CallMeExhausted · 08/08/2014 15:39

Here is an opening script...

"Hello, how are you? Lovely (or foul, whatever's appropriate) weather we are having. How's the family? Take care - see you soon."

See, that's not hard, is it?

Gruntfuttock · 08/08/2014 15:40

Unless they go around saying the kind of obscene things that Joan Rivers came out with recently www.independent.co.uk/news/people/joan-rivers-palestinians-deserve-to-be-dead-9656554.html YABU

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 08/08/2014 15:40

Presumably you never speak to Germans, because of the Holocaust?
Or Serbians, because of Srebrenica? Or anyone British, because face it, we've done everybody over?

This is incoherent.

KERALA1 · 08/08/2014 15:40

Words fail. Is this serious? If everyone thought like this the world would bring to a halt.

Yabu.

They are people first and foremost, regardless of their nationality. They have no say over the political climate of a country they are not living in.

People are rather blinkered with the middle east conflict, but I can sure that it is not as black and white as you are assuming.

ADHDNoodles · 08/08/2014 15:42

Are you serious?? Do you blame all British people for the atrocities that have been committed in the name of British imperialism over the centuries?

I blame the British for the Daily Mail. Sad

KERALA1 · 08/08/2014 15:42

How would you feel if you were held personally to account for David Cameron's actions irrespective of your personal beliefs, behaviour or how you voted?

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/08/2014 15:44

Yabvu

www.telegraph.co.uk/history/9653497/British-have-invaded-nine-out-of-ten-countries-so-look-out-Luxembourg.html

I'm surprised anyone wants to talk to the Brits given our history.

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 08/08/2014 15:45

I blame the British for the Daily Mail

What, even Quakers and Guardian readers?

lungidancer · 08/08/2014 15:47

The neighbours are Israeli. I'm British. Our country played a big role in creating this conflict. I'm NOT judging them.

I haven't seen them since this started. I will see them next week. They will be returning to Israel in the next few months as their contract has come to an end. I assume they will be shocked and dismayed that they return to all this. They are diplomats working for the Israeli foreign service though, so who knows their ultimate stance on it which is why I don't want to get into conversation about it.

They may also be appalled at what is going on in gaza. Treat them as individuals with their own minds and conscience.

Gruntfuttock · 08/08/2014 15:49

If you're not judging them why are you angry with them, because that's what you said :- "So, AIBU to be angry with them personally? Because I am angry with them. I'm angry about the whole situation."?

bottlecat · 08/08/2014 15:50

I doubt they want to get into a conversation about it with you either Hmm

Boysclothes · 08/08/2014 15:52

You're not judging them (how big of you!! You sound like a really amazing person, imagine managing not to judge someone because their government is doing something shitty! That's, like, so understand and zen) but you are angry with them personally?

Southpaws · 08/08/2014 15:52

So, AIBU to be angry with them personally? Because I am angry with them.

So what part of this sentence of your OP is you not judging them, please enlighten me. You have admitted to being angry with them personally for actions totally out of their control.

bauhausfan · 08/08/2014 15:53

I'm N.Irish and living in England - many innocent N.Irish people have been beaten up/abused because of IRA activity despite having damn all to do with it (and in fact having had to live with the misery of it far worse than the English). I have seen the same thing happen to Muslims here too since 9/11 and now any old poor bloody Jewish person is going to get it. Is there not enough hatred and fighting in the world without you starting your own personal little war?

MrsAtticus · 08/08/2014 15:53

Your neighbours could be just as upset about what the Israeli government are doing as you are. Perhaps that's why they live on your street and not in Israel.
