The mumsnet nappy hacks video, surely if you use a make up brush to apply nappy cream because 'washing your hands after applying cream is abit of a pain', you would have to wash the brush thoroughly which would possibly take longer? Or do you leave the brush sitting around with old cream on it? Who does a nappy change etc without washing hands anyway?

No offence intended. Just seems random, pointless and rather unhygienic to me. Each to their own I guess.

I've just watched the video. The two nappy thing is if one of the tabs has broken, you put a second nappy over the top to keep the first one in place and then use the second nappy next time you need to do a change. It seems bonkers to me. I don't think I ever had a tab break when putting a nappy on, but if it was a regular problem then the obvious solution would be either changing brand or some sellotape.

The brush thing looks rank.

Lizzie's tip to use disposable gloves is useful. DH gets problems if he washes his hands too much. I think we might be buying some disposable gloves so that he can take full part in nappy changes. I think some nurseries do that too.

I have a friend who managed to incorporate washing her hands 3 times into each nappy change. I am not sure if she curbed it a bit once her DD had fallen off the changing table while she was busy washing her hands.

Makes no sense, the brush would be harbouring all sorts of germs! I use fingers then wash hands afterwards. Also wipe rest of cream onto nappy from my fingers.

CrohnicallyDepressed · 08/08/2014 07:42

All the nurseries I know use disposable gloves for changing, for a few reasons. 1, it must be seriously gross getting someone else's child's poo on your hands, even for a moment. 2, it protects in the unlikely event of a transmissible disease (after all, they are dealing with bodily fluids) and 3, it means the workers don't have to be washing their hands so often- if they change all 3 of their babies at the same time they change gloves and wash hands once at the end, instead of 3 times.

ShadowStar · 08/08/2014 07:55

Disposable gloves seem like a much better idea than using a brush to apply nappy cream if you're wanting to avoid washing hands / getting nappy cream on your hands.

And as for "the point is that washing off sudocream is like washing off goose fat" - I use a baby wipe to get excess nappy cream off my hands before washing them and that seems to work pretty well. It's certainly less faff than washing out a brush covered in nappy cream.

CalamitouslyWrong · 08/08/2014 08:02

I've never found sudocrem hard to wash off.

CalamitouslyWrong · 08/08/2014 08:02

The brush would be dirty because it's covered in sudocrem, btw.

Eminybob · 08/08/2014 08:21

Provided you don't get actual poo on your hands, could you just use hand sanitiser gel, and then use the brush for the nappy cream? It would save leaving the baby to go and wash your hands.

JimmyCorkhill · 08/08/2014 08:34

Apply sudocrem then wipe the excess on to the inside of the new nappy you're about to use. Gets it off your hands (before washing) and just adds more cream to baby's bum.

Haven't watched the video but both the make up brush and the two nappy ideas sound totally mad. I always just washed my hands very thoroughly at the end. Otherwise disposable gloves would definitely be the way to go.

EverythingCounts · 08/08/2014 08:39

Also I hate this idea that washing your hands is a big imposition. It takes 30 seconds FFS even when done properly and many people around the world would love to have proper hand washing facilities, not regard it as a chore. If frequent washing is drying out your hands, that's a different issue.

DoJo · 08/08/2014 09:13

In fairness, as someone who has suffered cracked and bleeding hands, I can empathise with the horror you feel when you're going to have to go through the process AGAIN even though you know it will exacerbate the problem and sting like buggery, but wearing gloves is a much better solution than adding a nappy cream brush to your routine!

wonderingsoul · 08/08/2014 11:42

Orrr just don't use soda cream.. Use a different cream that isn't a bitch to wash off.

DiaDuit · 08/08/2014 12:07

sudo cream! Grin

I used metanium. It was a bastard to get off.

DiaDuit · 08/08/2014 12:08

Or is it creme? Confused
