To wonder why The 100 aren't worried about having sex?!

Any one been watching the new series 'The 100'?
[Quick update if you haven't - ppl live on a satellite in space (the ark) as earth had a nuclear radiation catastrophe 75yrs ago. The ark's oxygen supply is running out. They sent a bunch of teens to earth on a mission to see if earth is habitable. Teens can't go back to the ark they just have dorky wristbands transmitting their vital signs to the ark.]

So anyone else unable to watch these teenagers romping around on earth have casual sex without screaming at the tv 'where's your CONTRACEPTION!!!!! You will get PREGNANT!!'

So then I am unable to watch the rest of the episode in peace because I am trying to work out:
a) if they start getting pregnant who is going to deliver their babies safely?
b) is the series going to then have to turn into a documentary about a primitive tribe on earth whose main aim is survival of their babies
c) perhaps none of them are concerned with pregnancy as they have all been fitted with contraceptive implants on the ark
d) the only answer is they all came down to earth with lifetime's supply of condoms.

Thoughts anyone?

I've been watching.

Answer: they don't expect to live long enough. And if they do, they need to repopulate the planet.

But yes, it's a massive plot hole!

Creatureofthenight · 06/08/2014 23:25

I had assumed that everyone is on long term contraception because of the one child policy on the Ark?

grocklebox · 06/08/2014 23:25

haven't seen it but if its futuristic sci-fi I'd suppose they have simple long term contraception of some kind.

squishinglittlefatcheeks · 06/08/2014 23:32

All very valid points. But they are all teens mostly not in long term relationships so would not have got to the point of having long term contraception fitted?

And if they do need to repopulate earth how will they look after their babies? Poor hygiene and sanitation etc.

Aargh.

Are there dinosaurs?

TheFirstOfHerName · 06/08/2014 23:35

I can't get past the terrible acting. Or the ridiculous plot.

ShadowStar · 06/08/2014 23:36

I'm going for option (c).

Remember the one child policy on the ark? I'd be willing to bet that everyone's fitted with long term contraception as standard unless they're actively trying for their one and only child. Particularly given the death sentence if you step out of line up there.

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 06/08/2014 23:38

They don't seem to be too bothered about eating, drinking or toilets either! The thing that really, really gets me is the stuff they have on the ark. I know they're all wearing artfully ripped and holey clothes but there is no way they would be able to get any new resources whatsoever.

I guess we should just enjoy it for what it is and suspend belief!

I quite liked Terra Nova. I suppose they'd have all ended up being eaten by the dinosaurs after new supplies from the future stopped turning up though.

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 06/08/2014 23:46

I really enjoyed terra nova, there are similarities, Tis true

No idea what the show is.

But it seems logical they would be encouraging procreation if they're hoping to repopulate the Earth... if the girls fell pregnant right away, they have nine months to establish a stable base, and the boys could continue doing whatever to survive/provide for the new generation.

No matter what, they'll have to live primitively. For all we've advanced, all we need to keep going is a food source, water, and shelter. It wouldn't be pretty, and very hard on women and children, but if they're re-establishing the species there isn't much choice, is there? I don't think they'd be wanting to wait, you'd pretty much have to optimize your fertile years with as many babies possible, knowing there's no guarantees on if they'll make it to adulthood; that's how we had babies historically, and having just a few children to give the best life possible with the assumption they will all live is a relatively recent first-world scenario.

ShadowStar · 07/08/2014 00:21

The 100 have been sent down to see if the earth is survivable though - idea is that everyone on the ark will follow if it's safe.

So immediate procreation wouldn't necessarily be planned for.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 07/08/2014 00:34

Having seen the entire first season - they have much bigger things to worry about....

ThisIsBULLSHIT · 07/08/2014 00:34

LOVE this show.

I wondered the same too when Clark and her bf (can't remember his name) DTD in the last episode.

I, well, we DH and I, love this programme! I just bloody hope it doesn't turn out like Lost...

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 07/08/2014 00:34

I think she is going to get pregnant (the main one, can't remember her name now for some reason!) and I think that is going to be part of the plot line.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 07/08/2014 00:35

Ahh This, thank you for that, it was Clark. :)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/08/2014 00:36

DH watches this Hmm
In Episode 1, Jasper (Devon Bostick) gets a spear lobbed at him.
"Oh, that was quick" I thought.

No, he's up and about.

ThisIsBULLSHIT · 07/08/2014 00:36

Grin had to ask DH....!

HappySeaTurtles · 07/08/2014 01:41

Never heard of it, but it looks interesting. I'll see if I can get past the angsty teen tropes. Grin

NCFTTB · 07/08/2014 01:46

When is it on and what channel please?

TheFirstOfHerName · 07/08/2014 07:33

ALittleFaith · 07/08/2014 09:46

Monday nights at 9pm.

I'm quite this show but yes, I did wonder about her jumping into bed with Finn. You wouldn't imagine he's got a condom in his wallet. I wonder if it'll have consequences later now that Raven has come to earth too.

TeaRex · 07/08/2014 09:55

I actually thought the same thing so glad I'm not the only one wondering if there's going to be 50 babies in the next season. The show is utter crap but I do enjoy it :)

ginnybag · 07/08/2014 10:21

If you're curious, you could read the book it's based on...?

Tbh, though, it's something that I always wondered about with the Hunger Games. The Career tributes tend to be 17 or 18 and are actively trained for it and know they need to boost ratings for sponsors. The odd bit of porn wouldn't hurt that and teenagers aren't exactly known for self-restraint.

'We're going to die in the next couple of days...' would probably lead to a fair bit of shagging!!
