to come to UK?

So lately I wonder whether to come to UK. I'm from Poland. Live in a big city, have a job I like. I'm a mother of 2. My husband works too. We have 3 badroom apt, 2 cars and live a pretty stable life. On the other hand I want something more. I need a new experience. I'd like to live in a country wwith more opportunities. Before the kids we lived for a while in US, where we worked and traveled. We speak english but it's not as good as I wish. Not yet. I'm about 30 and it's been almost 6 years I haven't used the language. But anyway, I would like to make a change and go to UK. But I'm scared a little too. I was in London and Oxford once, I liked it there. But being a turist is way different than trying to settle down.
And finally I go to the point. Do you think its resonable? What do you think about so many immigrants in UK? Do you even want us there? A tough question I know. But I need to know how it really looks like before I make a final decision. Its not only about me. I don't want my children to feel any worse. So pleasy give me an answer and help me make my mind couse I don't know what I should do...

A glut in labour force does drive wages down. It's about supply and demand.
Many immigrants are well educated yet take low paid menial work as there is little else available.

Canada seems to be beautiful but is far away. I could visit my family and friends far less.

At the moment I think I should rather stay.

From the other hand I prefer to regret what I did than what I did not do.

Don't really understand why you'd want to leave Poland, it's lovely there.

Yes, she pays well above minimum wage. Hmm How you could have understood from my post that she paid below minimum wage is beyond me.

I think you would get on well here. Give it a go.

Northwich has a Polish community and a Polish club and church. It was a town that hosted polish refugees in the war and many stayed here. The local children attend the catholic schools. the local college has English language lessons for adults in the afternoons. it is a small town with countryside around it, 30 minutes away from Liverpool or Manchester.

If you have an ongoing condition that means you need to see a GP, research the area and it's GP surgery - I say this because I've had problems with numerous ones. Not being able to get appointments for weeks, etc.

They simply can't meet demand but aren't employing more GPs, or more people dont want to become GPs.. I dunno

I'm an immigrant in England, and it's fine really. The only thing I would think about is to make sure your kids know enough English to jump straight in to school/pre-school etc, and to get jobs you think you can live with before you move. I lived in Southampton and as bmw6 said, it's a big polish community there so might be a good place for you.

Funny how op wants to experience a new culture and ghe main focus is on finding her a nice polish community! Grin

Do we all just presume that poles prefer to stay in their own little world when seeking new experiences abroad?

MorphineDreams · 08/08/2014 22:42

My neighbour is Polish and he doesn't want anything to do with his 'polish community' as (his words) 'they're lazy fookers' Shock

Which I'm glad of because I love his company and don't want him disappearing into the polish community Envy

"I'm a psychologist. I work with people with mental disabilities. I like my job so much and would like to do something similar."

I would imagine you would need a very good command of the nuances of the spoken English language to perform this role and communicate effectively and do Cbt, in addition to really good cultural knowledge to see where the patient is coming from.

My friends wife is Polish. Moved to Britain before Poland joined the EU so had to sit all the medical qualifications exams again so she could practise as a doctor here.

As far as I am aware other Polish friends who came over post joining EU did not have to do everything again, though there were probably checks of some kind to make sure everyone was singing from the same hymn sheet, so to speak.

So in terms of continuing in your current profession in the UK, I think you would be able to.

Most towns/cities have a number of Polish shops these days and depending on what area you live in, the supermarkets have little sections too.
