I have used anxiety medication in the past and I felt that it worked for me and made a difference. However like you I became concerned about the side effects and long term effects and I am now no longer taking them.
That was a personal decision for me and not one to be taken lightly, by anyone. The most important thing is that you take care of your health and decide what is right for you. It might be that you decide you need them for a short time or a longer time.
Don't do anything without taking advice from a medical professional.
Personally I don't believe that medication alone is the right way to treat anxiety. You need to be having some sort of therapy, CBT or talking therapy or whatever is right for you, alongside your medication.
If your GP has not referred you to your mental health team, I would go back and insist that you are referred. If your anxiety is effecting your working life you need that support.
I also personally think that it is worth having a good look at your diet and general health. Having a good diet and getting some exercise has been shown to help some people alleviate their anxiety symptoms.
If you can, put some support systems in place so that you have someone to talk to about your anxiety. Make sure you get as much rest as you can. Don't forget to do fun things, ring a friend, watch a funny film, dance to daft music - it all helps.
I wish you all the best.
