Hi everyone I collapsed on the street about a month ago and since then I have had generalised anxiety problems which are causing me problems physically at work. The problems include imbalance and unbearable lack of energy. I went to the go today and he prescribed me Prozac after the 2 minute discussion we had regarding my symptoms. I've read various informative sites regarding the use and side effects (which most of are what I went to the doctor to ask him to treat) please help

I have used anxiety medication in the past and I felt that it worked for me and made a difference. However like you I became concerned about the side effects and long term effects and I am now no longer taking them.

That was a personal decision for me and not one to be taken lightly, by anyone. The most important thing is that you take care of your health and decide what is right for you. It might be that you decide you need them for a short time or a longer time.

Don't do anything without taking advice from a medical professional.

Personally I don't believe that medication alone is the right way to treat anxiety. You need to be having some sort of therapy, CBT or talking therapy or whatever is right for you, alongside your medication.

If your GP has not referred you to your mental health team, I would go back and insist that you are referred. If your anxiety is effecting your working life you need that support.

I also personally think that it is worth having a good look at your diet and general health. Having a good diet and getting some exercise has been shown to help some people alleviate their anxiety symptoms.

If you can, put some support systems in place so that you have someone to talk to about your anxiety. Make sure you get as much rest as you can. Don't forget to do fun things, ring a friend, watch a funny film, dance to daft music - it all helps.

I wish you all the best.

I preferred Citalopram, Don't drink with Prozac, used to give me crippling headaches

VSeth · 06/08/2014 13:41

it helped my anxiety following a head injury. only side effects for me was an inability

Sorry posted too soon. I couldn't drink booze and lost my sex drive. it made me feel like I could cope though

MeerkatTargaryen · 06/08/2014 13:53

I've taken it in the past. For depression though. I was lucky that I had no side effects. I want to use citalopram next time I get depressed though as I don't think it works that well for me now. I'm fine at the moment luckily.

All side effects (however rare) have to be really spelled out in drugs packets, which can make for scary reading, but usually affect few takers.

My DD (16) has been on Fluoxetine for around 10 months now. This was for depression and eating disorders. She feels much better, and apart from an initial problem with sleeping (which may have just been the depression) has no side effects. She has recently started running and swimming, so is not suffering from a lack of energy.
She had a brief switch to citalopram, but this did not work so well, and as it has a much shorter half life, was not so good if she forgot to take it (which was often!).
During her citalopram days, we tried some liquid magnesium to help with anxiety (quite expensive but worth it). This worked well, so she still takes occasionally at difficult times.
I hope this helps, and that you feel better soon OP.

I was on Fluoxetine several years ago for depression. I only needed them for 8 or 9 months and they made a massive difference in a relatively short space of time. Never had any side effects either.

Yet a friend was prescribed Citalopram and she was on them quite a long time and it took several months for them to kick in.

If I ever needed to go back on the meds I would definitely opt for Fluoxetine.
But I guess everyone is different regarding side effects and you wont know if you are affected until you try.

Pericolo123 · 06/08/2014 15:43

Thankyou for your help with this. I'm feeling that fluoxetine is probably too long term for the problems I have and can't get past the blasé way this doctor prescribed them. I don't feel depressed, I'm particularly upbeat in general but I feel physically anxious and have difficulty feeling totally rested. Did the magnesium help with the anxiety alone?

Hi periclo, my dd certainly believed that it helped her. This is what we bought, please see the testimonials for this and /or other ionic liquid magnesium. Anxiety and restlessness are both mentioned as conditions that it would help, and other customers have said that it does too. Tablet magnesium is nowhere near as good, apparently.

www.amazon.co.uk/Liquid-Minerals-Magnesium-Servings-Elemental/dp/B005PFK3YS/ref=pd_sim_d_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1Q2BBV5PJHEX3B2D4R0P

It certainly cant do any harm, at least!
Yes, the blase attitude of your doc is worrying. DD was under a consultant psychiatrist and having big problems before being prescribed fluoxetine.
