to want lifts all to myself

I commute to central London with my DS in a pushchair, thankfully the stations I use have lifts (several of them to take each time), and those lifts are slow. So if you miss it, it's another 5 min wait (which is not that bad, but when going home after a long day every minute seems like forever)
AIBU to be annoyed at people who take up space in the lifts when they could be taking the escalator, obviously I'm not talking about the disabled, the ones with young kids (even if walking), the ones with luggage etc, it's the ones that don't have anything wrong with them other than usually being overweight.
Why, oh why do you prefer to queue up for the lift that takes forever rather than stand on the escalator - you don't even have to walk more, if anything it's probably less walking! Is there such thing as fear of escalators and is it very common?
I just don't get it, before DS I had never used a lift in the underground.
AIBU?

sirzy and again. Do you feel that way about trains? Nope. A sign having to point it out doesn't make it any more real. And since escalators mean you don't have to walk voids most of your points anyway.

MorphineDreams · 09/08/2014 20:52

Can I just reiterate I'm talking about numerous places I've been, including Manchester, in which there are escalators but people instead chose a lift.

Sirzy · 09/08/2014 21:09

Its not comparable to trains. And I have never seen a sign trying to dictate who can who can use a lift.

If people want to use a lift they can, they shouldn't have to justify that choice any more than they need to justify the use of stairs or an escalator.

Lauren83 · 09/08/2014 21:53

I have seen lots of signs saying who takes priority for lifts

PleaseJustShootMeNow · 09/08/2014 22:39

I can see both sides. On the one hand I agree that lifts are for everyone. But as a disabled person with a baby in a buggy I can also see how frustrating it can be waiting when other people have other options.

We were on a ferry the other day and there was just 1 tiny lift to the car decks. You could only fit 1 pram and 1 adult in at a time. When they announced the car deck was open it was a complete free for all to get the lift. Despite there being several staircases leading down. It was so frustrating and difficult to stand waiting for almost 30 minutes at the back of a massive scrum when you know full well that the majority could take the stairs.

ICanSeeTheShardFromHere · 09/08/2014 22:41

Exactly. If I had the option I'd always take the stairs or the escalator.

Others have the option and just think 'fuck it I'll take the lift'.

Entirely their prerogative but annoying nonetheless.

MorphineDreams · 09/08/2014 22:50

Really surzy? I think people being selfish and making it harder for people who rely on certain things is comparable.

SirChenjin · 09/08/2014 22:55

It's one of those "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" things, isn't it?

Of course everyone is entitled to take the lift. Should they, if they can use the escalators instead, leave the lifts for people who really have no other choice? 'Course they bollocking should.

Sirzy · 09/08/2014 22:56

Making someone have to stand in a queue for something that is available for anyone isn't comparable to using a seat which is designed for a certain group. Even then though due to the hidden disabilities people need to tred carefully before they start complaining about "selfish" people.

MorphineDreams · 09/08/2014 23:07

Like sirchen said beforehand, just because you can doesn't mean you should. It's common sense to use an escalator if you're capable of doing so. Instead of using a facility that certain people have to rely on as their sole source of getting to different levels.
