To put a polite note on this car

Which has parked on the corner of our road?

I live in a small cul-de-sac or dead end road which is quite narrow, just about space for two cars to pass with double yellows on one side. There are number of cars who park in our road all day after the local car park started to charge, £3.50 per day. I know it is a public road so they are perfectly entitled to park there and although it is annoying I would not dream of saying anything to them so long as they don't block my drive.

Today, a regular parker, has parked right on the corner. The road is an 'L' shape with no turning circle so the corner of the 'L' is the only place with space to turn.

AIBU to put a note on her car explaining that where she has parked today makes it very difficult to turn round and that she risks getting her car damaged as delivery vans attempt to turn or reverse past her?

i would do the same, if i couldn't see the driver. would make her think twice if she realises it's in a vulnerable position hopefully.

Nancy66 · 06/08/2014 10:18

If the parking bothers you then you need to consult your council about getting it made residents only. It really isn't the drivers fault, most roads don't have anywhere to turn.

JoinedJustForThis · 06/08/2014 10:22

If it's right on the corner then I think it's illegal according to the Highway Code.

Might be worth checking & if it is, call 101...

NCISaddict · 06/08/2014 10:22

I think it is the drivers fault though, I was always taught not to park on a corner and this is a ninety degree corner not a slight bend. It makes it virtually impossible for a large van to reverse past which they would normally be able to do.

I have the same problem where I live. A local business park which doesn't have enough parking uses my estate as a car park. My road is v v narrow. I've missed deliveries where drivers haven't been able to get down the road. My council is meant to be doing something about it but I'm not holding my breath. I would put a note on the car. I've stated on my notes in the past that their car is causing an obstruction should god forbid emergency services need access.

NCISaddict · 06/08/2014 10:26

An ambulance would certainly struggle to get back out, a fire engine would just bump her out of the way!

It wouldn't cross my mind to be even remotely bothered. If her car gets pranged by a reversing van, then tough.

As you said, she's allowed to park on a public street and maybe if councils didn't introduce ridiculous parking charges, then people would be able to park more considerately.

jacks365 · 06/08/2014 10:26

Is this the 'ccorner' or a bend in the road. If it's a corner ie junction then the car is illegally parked if it's just a bend theen I'm afraid other vehicles need to take more care.

Beemer30 · 06/08/2014 10:28

Oh it's also against the highway code to park within 32ft of a junction unless in an authorised space. You could report it to 101 non emergency police if it is contravening this I suppose.

It isn't a junction and I accept it's not illegal but is inconsiderate and would make emergency egress difficult and slow simply because her rear end is stuck out into a narrow road.

If it is a real concern and the car is legally parked, perhaps you need to bring it to the attention of the council and it needs a double yellow line?

alleypalley · 06/08/2014 10:29

If it would block access to a fire engine then I would report it to someone, 101 or the council. It should be removed.

NCISaddict · 06/08/2014 10:31

I just thought that a polite note might bring it to her attention that it is not the safest place to leave her car for the day. It may not have crossed her mind that bigger vehicles than hers need to use the road, after all we all do stupid things sometimes without thinking.

Call 101 and report a car causing an obstruction.

We did recently when someone decided they'd rather park round the corner from their nice shiny new evening bar job and basically more or less block our cul-de-sac (parked right opposite another parked car making it pretty much impossible for anyone to get down to their houses for the whole evening).

Police took the number, traced address, she ended up getting a call at work from the police asking her to move her car sharpish. Not the best way to look good in your new job...

jacks365 · 06/08/2014 10:34

It might make this driver think twice but won't stop the next one. If it is a serious problem then you would be better reporting to the council to get something done permanently.

NCISaddict · 06/08/2014 10:34

A fire engine will nearly always get by (getting fire officers to bump the car out of the way if necessary) but they rarely have to leave the scene quickly. An ambulance would find it more difficult and it would probably involve a multi multi point turn and I would be more concerned about that.
I don't want it removed today as I know it will only be there until 5.30 but it could easily get bumped and she'd probably blame the residents.

I would put a polite note with maybe a little white lie included.

Hello driver

I just wanted to let you know that a van came very close to hitting yours today as it was turning in to the street. I have had a quick look and I cannot see any damage and I didn't see him hit but it was very close. This is a difficult road to manoeuvre around and over the years most of the accidents have happened to cars parked on this corner.

I just didn't want you come back to your car one day to see it had been hit.

Lally112 · 06/08/2014 10:43

I would knock it with my towbar just enough to give it a ding - but I am a miserable cow this morning. I do sympathise though OP, I hate it when that happens.

LL12 · 06/08/2014 12:14

WE have the same problem, live in a small narrow cul de sac with a turning point half way up the road.
One neighbour that lives opposite can't understand that they have a driveway to park on and uses the turning point as their own personal NCP car park and another neighbour has now told her friend to leave her car parked there all day when she wants to use the bus into town. There is a park and ride with a free car park 2 mins drive away.
It may not be illegal to park there but it does highlight the don't give a damn about anyone else attitude that many seem to have.
It also makes it very dangerous for cars and lorries having to reverse back down the road as there is nowhere to turn round because of them.

auntjane2 · 06/08/2014 13:30

I think your original idea of the polite note "explaining that where she has parked today makes it very difficult to turn round" is very good NCISaddict.
