Ovarian dermoid cyst 7 year old daughter

Hi was looking for Advice and information...
My 7 year old daughter was complaining of lower abdomen pain after being rushed to hospital with suspected appendicitis she had an x ray and what appeard to show up was a dermoid cyst on her ovary she had an ultra sound which measured it at 3cm they said it doesn't look like it's moved or wrapped itself round her ovary so they are not sure weather this is causing her the pain. So we are still no better to finding out whays causing her pain! Has anyone ever heard of this in a young child before? I'm quite confused they said they will do an MRI scan to a later date to see if they need to remove this. Could this cause her problems later on in life? There's not much information on the web about dermoid ovary cysts in young children.
Advice would be grateful
Helen

Thanks Hope she feels better.

I have no idea about how young they can get, but ovarians cysts can hurt.

I hope your dd feels better soon Flowers

My sister had something similar when she was about 11. They never operated on hers (not sure why) but it stopped causing her any pain.

She has since gone on to have two children without any difficulty so no issues later on.

Cake for your dd x

Never heard of it being discovered in someone so young but I assure you they bloody hurt, especially if they rupture. They can also 'wrap round' the ovary and affectively tie off the fallopian tube (torsion) so her fertility in the future would be affected by this. Its usually keyhole surgery these days to remove them but if the cyst is very large then it cannot be removed by laparoscopy.

I had two huge ones as a 30 year old adult. Never caused me pain but they whipped them out mid Caesarian section. I really wouldn't worry. Our bodies all have loads of cysts and bumps most of which we have no knowledge of.

nicely and without any malice - talk to her consultant and stop googling

I'm so sorry your dd has been through this.

As Frank says, talk to her Consultant.

Hugs to her and you.

They did not have much information on children having this they said it's very rare and all the nurses were very intrigued by this x ray as they never come across this in a minor.
All they could tell me is some people are born with them I just want to know if anyone else has experienced the same problem with a minor.

The doctor even said she was going to write a study on this as it's not common

Hi Miagrace 12,

My daughter is 9 and we noticed she had a large lump in her abdomen towards the end of July this year. We were very worried and after she'd had an ultrasound and MRI we found out she had a large dermoid cyst on her right ovary. She had her surgery nearly 2 weeks ago now (at Kings in London) and even though they had to remove her ovary, she is now almost back to normal, although can't do anything too strenuous for 4 more weeks. Her cyst was 8 x 7cm and had wrapped itself around her ovary, which is why they had to remove the entire ovary. Her left ovary is healthy, so her fertility should not be affected too much. We have been told that her left ovary may well start ovulating every month to compensate.

So it's not so unusual after all! If it was my daughter I would want the cyst out so that it doesn't get a chance to grow any bigger.

Let us know how you go...?

PS: I forgot to mention that my daughter did not have any pain as far as I know. I don't know why this was, I should imagine every cyst is different.
