To still nap when DD does even though she is 2.5?

Just that really. When we are at home at nap time, my DD won't go to sleep unless I lie with her which usually makes me so sleepy that I also drift off. I know everyone says at the newborn stage to nap when they do but what about toddlers? There isn't normally any pressing housework that needs to be done so if I don't sleep I usually just faff about online for an hour while she sleeps. Am I being lazy?

DD is 23 months and I'm due DC2 in 12 days...I think I need the nap more than she does Grin

ICanSeeTheSun · 04/08/2014 23:04

DC are in school (well be back September) I set my alarm to do the school run.

Housework will always be there, I have relaxed a hell of a lot. I used to vacuum and polish every room every day, bleach the bathroom and kitchen every day. These days I only Hoover and Polish once a week.

Notso · 04/08/2014 23:04

Am Envy I have 4 DC and never managed the sleep when they sleep thing.
Also Envy of no pressing housework. I never seem to get anything done when my 3 yo and 2 yo are awake and if I do I usually find they have created havoc elsewhere. They painted the patio doors with grass and sand soup while I made dinner today.

I love curling up with my 2 year old for a nap! He sleeps for longer when snuggled up and I either read a book or nap too! It's the highlight of my day! Enjoy those cuddles

trappedinsuburbia · 04/08/2014 23:08

I used to nap with ds it was lovely snuggling up with him, only stopped when he stopped napping.

ShinyShinySpoons · 04/08/2014 23:25

You are a grown up who has a child. You can nap whenever you want without having to explain your time to anybody.

I am 46. DS is 26. If I'm at home during the day and feel sleepy I have a nap, as does DP. I am not being lazy and neither is DP or you. Take sleep where and whenever you can.

Breezy1985 · 05/08/2014 00:15

Mine are 8 & 10 and I still nap in the day Grin My alarm is set everyday so I'm awake for the afternoon school run

Takeitornot · 05/08/2014 06:50

I'm most jealous. My DTD's are 10 months and I've never had a nap since they were born....

Oriunda · 05/08/2014 06:53

DS is 2.5 and am early riser and a very energetic boy. I'm an older mum too and it takes all my energy keeping up with him. I always nap (or at least rest) when he naps. No need to feel guilty or justify it.

Makinglists · 05/08/2014 07:12

I'm jealous! - this used to be my little treat when DS2 had his nap but he gave it up around Christmas (he was three). I felt better, he felt better we all felt better. We still have down time after lunch (aka Cbeebies) and I still sometimes snatch a 10 min power nap on the sofa. I am a much better person for a day time nap.

My kids are grown-ups, but I still nap..it seems to be a family thing, my dad has an afternoon nap, I have one, and 2 of my 4 kids nap in the afternoons when they are off work :-)

WeirdCatLady · 05/08/2014 09:23

Fave expression ever dieu - human bagpuss.
Love it Grin

Dd is 13 and every time I come upstairs she asks me if it's nap time :)
She hasn't napped in a decade but I'm still a regular :)

TheHorseHasBolted · 05/08/2014 09:58

MrsC - "I cant believe shes the oldest who still naps!"

I used to know someone who encouraged her dd to have a lie down every afternoon from 1 till 2 right up until she started school, she would have been almost 5. She didn't absolutely have to go to sleep but she had to lie under the covers quietly and could read if she wanted to, but in practice she often did go to sleep. I just hope she didn't miss it too much when she started school!

DizzyKipper · 05/08/2014 10:34

Great question, I'd been feeling a little guilty about this myself as there's always housework that needs doing (and realistically when DD (2) is asleep is the best chance I've got to get it done). I'm 35 weeks pregnant though so in my head had been justifying it as needing my rest, I'm glad other mums do it too!

DizzyKipper · 05/08/2014 10:35

Sometimes I actually just give up. Oh you've got a pen now have you, probably going to make a mess huh? I'll just go to my chocolate cupboard and eat silently in despair...

Notso · 05/08/2014 10:45

I'll just go to my chocolate cupboard and eat silently in despair... Grin

My four have some kind of chocolate super sense, the rustle of a dairy milk wrapper is like a call to arms and they descend onto the kitchen like slavering hounds.
I have tried giving up but my 14 year old DD is brutally critical of my housekeeping skills and shames me into looking busy.

whatsbehindthegreendoor · 05/08/2014 10:46

My son's 20 now and I still have naps in the afternoon! To be fair, I do work from home and I do wake up at 4am most mornings, but even so, I think a nap is a good thing to do.
You are not being unreasonable to have a nap when your daughter does!

Cyclebump · 05/08/2014 10:51

DH and DS have a regular swim and nap date... They swim at the local pool, we go for breakfast together, then DH and DS disappear for a nap.

So, so cute. DS is 3 btw.

ChatEnOeuf · 05/08/2014 12:40

I miss my DD's afternoon naps. DNBU.
