AIBU to think many on wanted down under have no intention of moving to Australia and just want a free jolly

Just occurred to me watching it today after a couple who would be 700 in oz would be worse off were still struggling weather it would be a good move

Exactly....

SilentCharisma · 05/08/2014 10:59

God yes, the woman on yesterday's one was a ghastly excuse for a human being.

I thought it was very telling when on the video messages from friends and family, that one of the participants said that it was her decision to move their, and not his.

Poor poor bloke. He needed to tell her where to go. Australia I guess. Alone.

What really annoyed me was the fact that she would be very unlikely to get a job was completely glossed over! If I was him I'd divorce her. Vile woman.

SilentCharisma · 05/08/2014 11:00

*move there, not their. Wouldn't think I was a copywriter would you?

IsabellaofFrance · 05/08/2014 11:09

They always over estimate what their own house is worth too.

Ant the fact that Australia is much more expensive than the UK always comes as a massive shock to them.

minibmw2010 · 05/08/2014 11:14

Yep, they start off very confident. 'Oh yes, our house is worth around £350/400K'. Then they sit down to see the estate agent open their cupboards and then follow up with 'we would market this Property in the region of £250/275K'. Cue lots of sucking in of breath ... Smile

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 05/08/2014 11:16

I spent a year in Oz, I was so excited about getting there and noting year round sunshine. When we touched down in Perth it was 13 fucking degrees and it didn't get warmer for quite a few more weeks. We skipped going to Melbourne in November because the weather looked pants and headed straight to Sydney.

I hate the way they talk about the year round hot weather. News flash peeps Australia has shit weather too unless you live in Darwin.

minibmw2010 · 05/08/2014 11:21

In fact in yesterdays episode it looked like there was a monsoon coming down and I felt so sorry for the children dressed for summer each time they showed them walking into the houses. They looked so cold !!! I don't think Nikki was a fan of the lady either (just my observation, obviously), she was quite sarcastic sounding to me in a lot of her voiceover.

Only1scoop · 05/08/2014 11:24

Just being picky now ....but I cringe at that bit where they are given the laminated flags which they revolve in their hand....keeping us in suspense....until they shout "Australia"

Just find it cringey Confused

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 05/08/2014 11:28

I know the little girl was all "I love the sunshine" she was wearing a sodding fleece!

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 05/08/2014 11:34

I should just say I loved Australia, it's an amazing place and I would love to go back someday.

Bue · 05/08/2014 11:42

The desire to spend "more family time together" makes me giggle every single time. Yep, that'll happen with less holiday entitlement and a nightmarish commute, because all they can afford is a house in some godforsaken identikit suburb miles from anywhere!

Why don't they just turn off the telly here in the UK and take a walk? Confused

Glastokitty · 05/08/2014 11:45

The usual Oz bashing on this thread. I moved here having never visited and I bloody love it. Grin. I wouldn't move back to the UK or Ireland if you paid me ( lived in both). About a third of people who move here go back for various reasons ( some of them reluctantly) but most people I know stay because they have weighed up the pros and cons and believe here is better. I don't know anyone here who didn't do lots of research though, I certainly don't know anyone who decided to ditch their family because they preferred to get new friends with a pool, now patronising!

echt · 05/08/2014 11:52

I see no Oz-bashing on this thread, just reasonable observations about the unrealistic expectations of those on the programme.

A good deal of the suburbs that Brits of the income range shown on the prog can get is Macmansions in the outer suburbs; a far cry from the fantasy they've concocted.

NightFallsFast · 05/08/2014 12:01

It's heavily edited but some of the people they find to go on it are ridiculous.

I'm an economic migrant to Australia. The sole reason I'm here is because I earn more money (about double compared to the UK in the same profession), and when I have earned enough to create a secure future for me and my family I plan to move back to the UK.

Of course the sun/sea/surf is fantastic, and it's nice to have a house with a pool and the weather to use it, but it's no substitute for my parents, extended family and all the lovely things about the UK.

NewtRipley · 05/08/2014 12:01

To be fair, I indirectly Oz-bashed, by reporting what my ILs said. Sorry for any offence

Cinnamonandfruitloaf · 05/08/2014 12:46

We moved to oz last year and although we were warned and from my own research we were still shocked at the cost of property here. When I watch wanted down under now, especially the ones in Sydney, I realise that they show houses which are an hour or more out of the city in suburbs that you probably wouldn't want to be in after dark.
We are a year into our move and are still undecided whether we will stay long term. It's a beautiful country, so. Inch for the kids to do and I have found everyone to be open and friendly but I miss my friends and family and I think they will be the pull back to the uk for us. Sorry to go off topic!

Cinnamonandfruitloaf · 05/08/2014 12:47

So much.... Stupid ipad

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 05/08/2014 12:51

Oh I'm thinking of re-emigrating need a visit to dsis and all my school friends

futureponyclubmum · 05/08/2014 14:02

My DH is kiwi and I've always said if he was ever desperate to go back then we would,(that's just part and parcel when you marry someone from another country IMHO)...but it would not be something we would do lightly and I know full well financially we'd be a lot worse off. Luckily he seems perfectly happy here. I do feel guilty now I'm pregnant his family will miss out on a lot but they would never be as hands on as mine anyway. People always say oh nz is so amazing why aren't you there? They don't believe me when I start outlining all the issues only thing they are right about is that it is amazing just you have to take it on with your eyes wide open that's all.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 05/08/2014 14:34

I know what you mean future. We love NZ but luckily we looked into the details of emigration and even with a considerable pay rise that was offered to DH it wasn't viable in the end. I do still wonder what if, but I know we made the right decision and we don't even have family ties to consider.

BranchingOut · 05/08/2014 15:30

This thread made me watch that episode.

Poor Brendan! His wife was putting so much pressure on him and he clearly felt so uncomfortable the whole episode. On the other hand, having been in (not even lived in) a few small inland villages in Cornwall, I can understand her wanting to make some change to their lives... Cornwall can feel more insular than other rural parts of the UK, in my opinion.

BranchingOut · 05/08/2014 15:32

Oh yes the bit that really worried me was the question of jobs - she clearly was going to find it difficult to get anything and would he really be able to break into the self-employed market as a non-Aussie painter/decorator? But the DW just assumed the best when they were working out the figures.

LIZS · 05/08/2014 15:40

There have been catch ups to some of these episodes including yday's iirc. Some had moved, some had put on hold , some stayed put. Often the calculations are not like for like , assuming the sahp then goes out and gets a job too. Don't you have to have permits etc based on being self sustaining, employment and desirability of skills. Surely decorators are two a penny ?

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 05/08/2014 16:51

If you want to emigrate to NZ, the medical is v strict. It included a specified max waist measurement when we were looking. I don't know whether that applies to OZ though.

LIZS · 05/08/2014 17:04

Today's couple were reliant on the vague job prospects of a pt TEFL teacher for a visa Hmm
