to think that the Harry Potter are timeless literature and the films are woefully miscast?

Inflammatory title to draw you in. I hope. I just fancied some HP chat. Smile

I'm re-watching the films at the moment. Is it me or is there something old-ladyish about Alan Rickman's mouth? I realize I am thinking about this far too hard, and I know it's practically forbidden to speak ill of him on MN. But every time I see those films, I'm disappointed again that he just isn't as sexy as his voice.

I also think the Burrow looks all wrong to me. I love what they do with the reeds in the scene where Bellatrix taunts Harry and he and Ginny run after her. But I imagined the Burrow being rural and farmland-ish, with an overgrown garden around it - not plonked down in the middle of a marsh. Am I right?

What's your favourite bit of the films/books?

I decided ages ago that I was going to ignore any of my own nit picking and just love the books and films because I enjoyed them so much first time round - why should I let the dozen subsequent readings spoil it?

I do think DR can act - saw him on stage last year and he was stunning, properly good. A bit like when I saw Ralph Fiennes in 1991 with the RsC and thought bloody hell, he's good.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 04/08/2014 16:08

Was accepted to do a phd in it too but had no money Sad. Maybe if I did a crowd funding initiative I could raise it?? Wink

Ooh yes.

youre - ahh, I enjoy the nit picking. It's how I am with anything I like reading. Blush

I'd love to see DR on stage.

They use their wands to make stuff appear on the blackboards so it's possible that's totally different to their actual handwriting

katese11 · 04/08/2014 16:32

I so wanted Richard Griffiths to play Slughorn. pity he was already in it!

And cutting out Rik Mayall ' s turn as peeves was a travesty.

SnapeAndLily · 04/08/2014 16:44

Ooh, yes, magic handwriting! I like that explanation Smile

SnapeAndLily · 04/08/2014 16:50

That video brought back a lot of memories sarcasticfecker - want to go and rewatch them now. Hermione punching Draco was wonderful Grin

Did remind me how much I hated that bit in Hallows where Harry and Voldemort zip about all over Hogwarts though - stupid.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 04/08/2014 17:10

God yes, the Harry- Hermione dance in the tent was cringey in the extreme.

Just bloody awful.

I like the Weasley twins. My first (not so) handsome swain had a touch of the Weasley twins. Minus the red hair.

Hulababy · 04/08/2014 17:18

Dd has just started re watching them. She saw film 1 at lunch time and now watching film 2.

"Did remind me how much I hated that bit in Hallows where Harry and Voldemort zip about all over Hogwarts though - stupid."

Yy.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 04/08/2014 17:21

Noooo - I love the dance in the tent!

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 04/08/2014 17:35

I think the dance does quite well I highlighting that there's no attraction between Harry and Hermione. If they were ever going to snog, it would've been then.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/08/2014 18:11

Ok, I am incredibly pathetic, but, in the film version, the half-blood prince and the person who writes the 'sectumsempra' spell are not the same person. They're in different handwriting.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/08/2014 18:14

Sorry, came on to post that and to advertise the depths of my lack of cool.

But I like the dance too.

The way I interpret it, Hermione definitely isn't interested in Harry. I think you get a sense Harry might be, and it's her who closes down the possibility. But it does very nicely establish that they are just friends.

I do find it hilarious throughout the last two films that you constantly have Ron and Hermione throwing themselves into each other's arms, and Harry grinning and joining in the group hug. You can just see Ron and Hermione simultaneously thinking 'damn!' Grin

NuggetofPurestGreen · 04/08/2014 18:25

Ha ha LRD. I never really got the sense Harry fancied Hermione and I hate the dancing.

Does it annoy anyone else that practically everyone gets married to people from school? Except Luna. And Tonks and Lupin I suppose. How often does that happen in real life? And yes I know it's not real life!!!

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 04/08/2014 18:26

Hmm, as the dance isn't canon, I refuse to believe that Harry was interested in Hermione... Especially as she's good friends with Ginny!

Grin
GatoradeMeBitch · 04/08/2014 18:28

I think the girl who played Ginny was a terrible actress. I can't help feeling she got the part because of who her parents are.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 04/08/2014 18:28

Harry is just so asexual. He's like a Ken doll.

(I know we've all seen DR's willy, but I bet HP hasn't got one, just a smooth plastic crease)

NuggetofPurestGreen · 04/08/2014 18:29

What's canon and what's not Bland? Some schools of thought hold that the films are canon as they are approved by JKR... Secondary canon but canon nonetheless.

(This would have been part of the subject of my poor aborted phd sigh]

DrankSangriaInThePark · 04/08/2014 18:29

Who are Ginny-actress's parents?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/08/2014 18:30

Erm ... Blush

Ok, it really does happen, nugget.

My first boyfriend (from school) is now married to our mutual schoolfriend. She introduced me to my shortly-to-be-ex-husband, who went to university with her. Her best friend at school is now in a long-term relationship with an ex-boyfriend of mine who was also at school with us. His best mate (schoolfriend) is married to the old head girl of my school. And her friend at school is married to the bloke she started dating when they were in their teens.

One of the first things a schoolfriend of mine said when I announced I was getting divorced was 'are you going to try to find a boyfriend who didn't go to [schoolname] this time?' She is currently going out with the older brother of our head girl.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 04/08/2014 18:31

And does Ginny not have any friends in her own year? Why does she hang around with them all?

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 04/08/2014 18:31

The books are canon COS I SAY SO

Grin
LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/08/2014 18:31

Ewwww! sangria I am loving your posts on this thread, but they are making my neighbours wonder why I'm hooting! Grin
