To throw out the bolognese?

CinnabarRed · 03/08/2014 07:34

DH cooked a big batch of bolognese yesterday evening to freeze for meals during the coming week. It's probably 4 nights' worth of supper for DH and me.

We both forgot to put it in the fridge, so it's been sitting on the hob overnight. DH left the top off the pan to allow some liquid to evaporate, and when I noticed this morning there was a fly on it.

I want to throw it all out. DH thinks it will be fine and it would be a waste to bin the lot.

Who is being unreasonable?

Not sure.
I would want to throw out too but are we being over zealous?

WitchWay · 03/08/2014 07:39

If you boil it up again it'll probably be fine.

londonrach · 03/08/2014 07:40

I'd bin it. Sorry food poisoning in Canada which took 2 weeks of my life away and left his so week I wanted to use a wheelchair as I couldn't stand means I don't take risks.

combust22 · 03/08/2014 07:40

I think you can reach a compromise. While not ideal being left overnight 9 hours won't kill. Being left uncovered is not good, but I would carefully remove the top inch or so of the top of sauce and freeze the remainder.

tohotnot · 03/08/2014 07:42

Throw it out if a fly has been on it. If I had just left it out covered and kitchen was cool I would use it. But not if a fly had been on it.

TheScreamingfrog · 03/08/2014 07:42

I did exactly the same last night and have just put it in the fridge!
Whether or not it's bad practice it is something I do quite often......

bonzo77 · 03/08/2014 07:43

Add plenty of water / wine. Simmer for 10 minutes. Cool rapidly then freeze in portions. Be sure to simmer again for 5 minutes before you serve, adding more water if required to stop it boiling dry. Will be fine. Boiling kills the sort of bugs you're worried about.

bonzo77 · 03/08/2014 07:44

Though I'd probably just reheat and eat, so YABU.

Mumof3xox · 03/08/2014 07:45

Eww

Bin

Hakluyt · 03/08/2014 07:47

I would chuck in half a bottle of red and bring it to the boil. Boil hard for 5 minutes, then simmer for half an hour. Lid on, cool and freeze. It'll be fine. And will taste even better for the extra cooking.

CinnabarRed · 03/08/2014 07:48

OK - I'm going to take off the top inch, resimmer for 10 mins, quick freeze, and then make DH eat the first portion to see what happens.

WeAreEternal · 03/08/2014 07:49

I was going to say it would be fine until you said a fly was in it. There is no way I would eat it I would have to bin it.

londonrach · 03/08/2014 07:50

If dh eats first potion wait 24 hours and see what happens. I'm sure it be ok. No point you being ill to as you have children to look after, Grin

MimiSunshine · 03/08/2014 07:52

Knowing a fly had been on it would freak me out. But I don't think I could chuck away a whole pan of food and be that wasteful.
So I'd probably scoop out around the whole area and get rid of that bit, because when you think about it, that fly could have landed on anything else in your kitchen and you'd never know.

Do you disinfect everything before you use it that you keep out (knives in a knife block, chopping boards etc), probably not.

CinnabarRed · 03/08/2014 07:52

Actually, we both work FT so I have no "looking after children" priority!

No, he eats the first portion because he's the one tag wants to keep it!

We live rurally, and next to a field of cows - flies are a permanent feature of summertime.

R4roger · 03/08/2014 07:54

i agree that a fly could land anywhere and you not know about it. it will be totally fine.

KnackeredMuchly · 03/08/2014 07:58

Bin it

Needadvice5 · 03/08/2014 08:00

I really wouldn't risk it, bin.....

siblingrevelryagain · 03/08/2014 08:01

Bin it-certainly don't re-heat it again then cool and freeze and re-heat a second time.

sooperdooper · 03/08/2014 08:03

I'd reheat it and eat it, it'll be fine, completely wasteful to throw it away

sooperdooper · 03/08/2014 08:05

I'm really surprised how many people would throw it away! Basic food hygiene is good but a lot if people are very over cautious imo

butterflybuttons · 03/08/2014 08:05

so you are going to reheat it now then freeze then reheat again? You are not meant to reheat more than once for starters - and left out overnight in the summer with a fly on it. Are you mad?? Bin it - honesty it is not worth the risk.

umiaisha · 03/08/2014 08:05

Definitely bin it.

R4roger · 03/08/2014 08:06

but what could a fly do?
