...to be annoyed at people bringing their dogs to a barbecue

Have NC'd for this ...

Disclaimer: I like dogs. Really I do. But today I was blimmin annoyed.

I was a guest at a barbecue. Four different people brought dogs, which were utter pests [not their fault: lots of lovely meaty smells, crisps to snaffle etc] We had dogs bumping into barbecues, licking tongs, scarfing down a whole bowl of tortilla chips, drooling on people's legs, sniffing at the buns and cheese slices set out, licking plates that people might or might not be coming back to, and so on.

I felt like Cruella de Ville, warding these dogs away from the food all the time. Their owners did b*** all to stop them. I would occasionally ask someone if they could keep the dog away from the food, or sometimes draw attention to whatever hideous slobbery thing it was about to do, but it had no effect beyond the dog being removed for 2 seconds and then let go again to resume its slobbering. Lots of kids around really keen on the doggies and the doggies really keen on the food they were holding.

Hostess not at all bothered. For all I know the dogs' owners may have asked if they could bring them.

But even if they did - why can people not see that bringing their dog to a BBQ is an unhygienic thing to do (unless it is stunningly well behaved and can stay away from the food prep area).

Nobody else seemed at all bothered. What is wrong with meeeeeeee?

HeySoulSister · 02/08/2014 22:26

I don't think barbecues are renowned for being particularly hygienic anyway

Staywithme · 02/08/2014 22:27

I have big barbecues in the summer and I have dogs but I keep them upstairs by putting a baby gate on. I don't want them eating too much or being annoyed by kids. However, since you're not the hostess, it's not up to you.

mistlethrush · 02/08/2014 22:28

If I had been invited and had taken my dog she would have been on a lead otherwise she would have been nicking sausages straight from the grill.

CoffeeTea103 · 02/08/2014 22:28

Yanbu, very rude IMO. Seriously are people that inconsiderate. I love dogs, have my own but it wouldn't even cross my mind to bring my dog along to anyone's home.

GothMummy · 02/08/2014 22:30

The hostess probably said "do bring your dogs". It wouldnt cross my mind to keep my dog at home if he was invited to a bbq!

CoffeeTea103 · 02/08/2014 22:30

Sorry I read it the other way around, but even so I wouldn't leave my dog running around a BBQ.

greeneggsandjam · 02/08/2014 22:31

That would be enough to make me want to leave.

NCFTTB · 02/08/2014 22:31

Yanbu - I hate this too!

CaptChaos · 02/08/2014 22:32

I wouldn't imagine any dog owner would just rock up to a BBQ with their dog, so they must have been invited. In which case, YABslightlyU, but YANBU should you decide you don't want to go there for a BBQ again.

Some people on here are a bit swivvely of eye and tin foily of hat when it comes to dogs, so I expect we will all be drowned in splutter soon Grin

ChoccaDoobie · 02/08/2014 22:34

Same as staywithme, in fact we did this yesterday, it would have been very mean to expect our dog not to be a nuisance at a BBQ.

phantomnamechanger · 02/08/2014 22:43

very odd indeed to mix lots of dogs (from different homes) with lots of food/smells/kids being loud etc

recipe for a disaster really

only OK if a family party where all the dogs and all the people know each other.

DogCalledRudis · 02/08/2014 22:44

If the hostess invited people with their dogs, then YABVU

GothMummy · 02/08/2014 22:44

My labrador does not beg for food, he lies down next to me in party/bbq/pub situations. Nor is he allowed to mooch around annoying people who are eating....

But I know some dogs can be very annoying round food!

You lot have got me worried now, my dog is almost always invited with the rest of us and I always take him, now Im worried I should be politely declining his invites!

RoseyHope · 02/08/2014 22:47

lots of lovely meaty smells, crisps to snaffle etc

Goodness I love the word snaffle.

Helpful.

MargotLovedTom · 02/08/2014 22:48

I guess if it's not your BBQ, and the hosts weren't bothered, then yabu to be annoyed in behalf of everyone else.

However it's VU of the owners to not control their dogs. We had a family bbq recently, our own dog was tethered to the trampoline otherwise he would have been an absolute nuisance.

CatThiefKeith · 02/08/2014 22:56

Goth, are you sure it's a lab? Grin

Yadnbu op. I love dogs, but am traumatised by a BBQ a couple of weeks ago where the hosts dog was fed ate too many sausages, threw up over the patio and then enthusiastically gobbled up it's own puke, before chucking it all up again at the end of the garden 10 minutes later! EnvyEnvyEnvy

Bunbaker · 02/08/2014 23:03

It just sounds yuck. I like dogs, but not when they are trying to compete with me for food.

GothMummy · 02/08/2014 23:04

Catthief, thats beyond grim! Poor dog! And poor you having to witness it!

Doesnt everyone train their dogs to be polite around food? . I would hate mine to eat inaporopriate foods or annoy people! Tbh it sounds like the owners at the OPs Bbq were a bit oblivious to their dogs behavior!

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 02/08/2014 23:07

Sorry but I would of left.

My sister treats her dig like a child and insists on taking him to all family parties. It's annoying!

deakymom · 02/08/2014 23:16

my dog used to leap over a lit barbeque im sure some hair used to get on the sausages i had to put a stop to her when she got older as she was occasionally incontinent Shock

littleSpud · 02/08/2014 23:17

Yanbu

CatThiefKeith · 02/08/2014 23:37

I try to train my lab to be polite around food.

Unfortunately she and dd (3) are as thick as thieves and dd lived to 'share' with ddog.

I need eyes up my arse I tell you!

RedSoloCup · 02/08/2014 23:44

We take our dog everywhere but he doesn't beg for food.... #helpful

Catsize · 02/08/2014 23:44

Rosey, you are right.

Imagine if you could snaffle waffles...

Oh, and yanbu OP.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 02/08/2014 23:54

Why on earth do you need to name change for this?
