In Colorado, here for 5 weeks.

Why the HELL is there a half inch gap on either side of the door in all public toilets?? You can see everything going on!!!
This has been the case everywhere I've been in America?
AIBU to be both baffled and embarrassed

lighthearted btw. I don't really think there's something wrong with the Americans

Boston Cream Pie is a sandwich type cake made with sponge. It may be the closest to a Victoria Sponge type cake that we have.

PetulaGordino · 08/08/2014 00:22

Ah I have heard of Boston cream pie but I assumed it was pastry-based

lettertoherms · 08/08/2014 00:22

Looking at pictures and recipes, I think a victoria sponge would be similar to an american pound cake? Is it pretty dense?

PetulaGordino · 08/08/2014 00:23

Victoria sponge is very light, I think pound cake is more like Madeira cake?

I was thinking more of the quintessential cake as Scone said rather than an exact match iyswim

lettertoherms · 08/08/2014 00:26

Ah, scratch that then. I suppose angel food cake would be sort of an equivalent then. Culturally, maybe our type of strawberry shortcake would be along the same lines.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 08/08/2014 00:27

Petula, for me it's this one. Smile

Pipbin · 08/08/2014 00:29

I would think that pound cake is the same as pound cake is so called because it is a pound of all ingredients.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 08/08/2014 00:30

I was thinking strawberry shortcake, too. But that varies regionally, I think. Here in the South, it is made with a biscuit (as in American biscuit) base; in other areas, it's a cake thing.

lettertoherms · 08/08/2014 00:31

I'm glad this thread about toilets is turning into a cake sharing thread.

Now I need to go pick up some strawberries.

I googled strawberry shortcake and got endless pictures of a cartoon character until I narrowed it down to recipes Grin

From pictures it does look very afternoon tea on the lawn type thing

Scone that cake looks fabulous

Can someone explain bathroom - yes, I mean bathroom! - procedure in Kuala Lumpur?

There was a person sized barrel of water and a scoop. Do you get in the barrel? Do you scoop and pour water over you? How do you wash your hair?

SconeRhymesWithGone · 08/08/2014 01:11

Damn, this thread has my sweet tooth in high gear now. I have a choice between key lime pie and chocolate chip cookies. I think it will be the pie.

SeaTurtleVomit · 08/08/2014 01:49

You guys crashed my diet.

Thanks.

Assholes.

Do you guys used tin soup in your recipes? I lived in Canada for awhile and couldn't believe that Campbell's soup was used in every recipe. We just don't seem to do that over here.

lettertoherms · 08/08/2014 02:42

Yes, mainly for casseroles. Cream of mushroom or cream of celery and such as a base/binder.

mathanxiety · 08/08/2014 02:46

The cake bit of Boston cream pie has the same ingredients as Victoria sponge, just very slightly different quantities iirc.

I make strawberry shortcake with a biscuit (*US) dough, just with more shortening, less milk, and sugar.

mathanxiety · 08/08/2014 02:50

Never. But I am basically Irish and learned to cook in Ireland. I do make a nice chicken or turkey tortilla casserole with green taco sauce and a tub of sour cream.

US here.

We use the cream of mushroom/whatever soup in casseroles, but I think that's about it. Actually, does anyone actually eat Cream of Mushroom soup as an actual soup? That just seems odd to me.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 08/08/2014 03:03

I don't know anyone who uses canned soup much in recipes anymore; I don't think it's as popular as it once was. I do have a couple of retro casserole recipes that my family likes that call for cream of mushroom soup, but the few times a year we make them, we use cream of celery because DH and I do not like mushrooms. But I do make green bean casserole every year for Thanksgiving with cream of mushroom soup.

OscarWinningActress · 08/08/2014 03:33

I'm in Canada. When we first moved here (mid 80's) I can remember my Mom being revolted by all the Campbell's soup casseroles that people used to make. Nobody makes them anymore, Thank goodness except MIL. Her specialty is one that involves cooked chicken breasts, (condensed) cream of mushroom soup, cream, honey and pasta topped with Cracker Barrel cheese and toasted almonds.
