In Colorado, here for 5 weeks.

Why the HELL is there a half inch gap on either side of the door in all public toilets?? You can see everything going on!!!
This has been the case everywhere I've been in America?
AIBU to be both baffled and embarrassed

lighthearted btw. I don't really think there's something wrong with the Americans

Well usually it does come with your meal, either in the form of a salad or just as a side. But I meant even in really basic places, I've never heard of them not having anything.

CheerfulYank · 05/08/2014 20:45

Oops! Confused

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 05/08/2014 20:56

There are grocery stores all over that sell fresh fruit and veg, often with an even greater variety than in Sainsburys. However, Walmart and Target don't necessarily.

I don't know any restaurants at all that don't serve veg, although there are a few you need to order it extra. In a lot of cases, you'll be served salad as a separate course anyway.

How could you not find fruit in Florida?? they grow more oranges than practically anywhere in the world

SconeRhymesWithGone · 05/08/2014 21:54

I have lived in Florida for 30 years. We are the land of fruit and vegetables!

I know the thread has moved on from the minimum wage discussion, but I wanted to point out that employers are required to pay part-time hourly employees minimum wage. They are paid by the hour so each hour they work they have to get minimum wage for that hour.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 05/08/2014 22:01

Yes, what is it with the fruit on meals? My observance of this is only from US TV, but as an example, I distinctly remember Walt and Jesse eating in a diner in Breaking Bad and they had something of the meat, mushrooms and chips type thing, and there were slices of orange on it Confused.

And yes, I am aware that Breaking Bad is unlikely to be representative of real life in the US Grin.

alemci · 05/08/2014 22:04

lovely fruit in supermarkets in Florida. the nectarines and peaches ripen properly.

just too much processed food.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 05/08/2014 22:09

We even have fruit and veg festivals in Florida: the Hastings Potato and Cabbage Festival; the Zellwood Sweet Corn Festival; the Plant City Strawberry Festival; the Ruskin Tomato Festival; the Florida Citrus Festival; the Dade City Kumquat Festival; the Pasco County Blueberry Festival; the Chiefland Watermelon Festival, and many more. A friend of mine's daughter was the Strawberry Queen one year.

dreamingbohemian · 05/08/2014 22:13

Scone, you are making me miss America

Olga79 · 05/08/2014 22:29

I think there are some foods/food combinations you have to grow up eating to actually appreciate

Corn dogs and root beer floats being two such things

sweetnessandlite · 05/08/2014 23:41

I'm reading a book at the moment and one of the characters goes into a pancake bar and orders a Red Velvet Stack of pancakes.

When the plate comes to the table, it has on it:

Pancakes,
Coloured with RED DYE!
Dripping with Chocolate Sauce
Melted Butter.
Whipped Cream
PLUS
Eggs (I'm assuming scrambled)
Bacon.

All this on one Plate. Together Shock

(I can believe it, as they like to mix up the sweet with the savoury).

CheerfulYank · 05/08/2014 23:47

Um...that sounds divine! As long as it's not mixed together.

CheerfulYank · 05/08/2014 23:51

And no chocoloate sauce! Eurgh.

sweetnessandlite · 05/08/2014 23:54

CheerfulYank,

I've had stacks of pancakes with syrup and eggs on the side (NY) and must admit, it DID taste delicious.
It just seems strange having syrup and eggs and bacon on the same plate.
But there ya go. :)

I'm hungry now

NancyinCali · 06/08/2014 00:50

I never thought I would say this but American bacon has grown on me. Especially with pancakes and maple syrup.

HappySeaTurtles · 06/08/2014 02:54

Bacon is not meant to be eaten without maple syrup.

wobblyweebles · 06/08/2014 03:08

Yep I like it much better than UK bacon now.

I'm still chortling at the poster above who couldn't find fruit or veg in Florida. That takes some doing.

wobblyweebles · 06/08/2014 03:10

imgur.com/gallery/iRSmRCg seems appropriate too...

HappySeaTurtles · 06/08/2014 03:19

WobblyWeebles Looks about right. They probably got their gun out of a vending machine too.

Gun vending machine

Sometimes they come in McDonald's happy meals. Derringers though, so they're small enough for the kids. Grin

SconeRhymesWithGone · 06/08/2014 03:27

Sorry, but whole wheat toast and only one egg and a European gun? I don't think so.

lettertoherms · 06/08/2014 03:46

And look at how weak that coffee is. Pah!

PetulaGordino · 06/08/2014 07:44

I was in the Midwest a couple of weeks ago and if I ordered a side salad (as I thought) it came as a separate course between the starter and main, a bit like the French do. It was no problem, I got on and ate it. Lots of fresh fruit and veg there too

londonrach · 06/08/2014 08:08

Went to the Hopi area and tried blue pancakes in America. Now those where amazing...

londonrach · 06/08/2014 08:10

Yum yum... Why we don't have blue corn in the uk. hippievegan.com/hopi-blue-corn-cakes-recipe/

alemci · 06/08/2014 12:23

American bacon seems fatty like our streaky.
