To work two jobs?

As a student many years ago I had a part time job. The company were good and I liked the work.

I am now and have been for many years a qualified professional and I earn just over £40000 p/a. I still work part time for the company though.

Many people think this is really weird - do you? Be honest! :)

If you enjoy it, YANBU!

Does jealousy count?

Doobiedoobedoobie · 02/08/2014 19:44

I guess it's unusual? But not weird in a bad way iyswim, just not what most people do.

If you are happy let people think whatever they wantSmile

I have 2 jobs. It's a juggle to be honest but it's manageable. I'm PAYE for one, self employed for the other so it doesn't mess the tax up (I'd be on 20% tax for the PAYE otherwise and this is my main job so I'd rather not).

I'm also employed full time and self employed. I volunteer as well. If you enjoy it and can manage it why not?

I worked with someone in a very similar position - f/t professional job, £40k+ salary plus p/t job on essentially minimum wage plus tips. The only weird thing I found about it was where she got the time and energy - I'm a fair bit younger than her and just couldn't do it, but would love to (such fond memories of part time uni job!)

PumpkinPie2013 · 02/08/2014 20:52

If you like the job and company and are happy to do both jobs then why not?

I loved the job I had as a student Smile

Unfortunately I don't have the time (or energy!) to do two jobs so 'just' do full time teaching but if I could and the opportunity arose then I would consider it Smile

On the face of it, if I were in a high earning profession, I would not like to deprive someone else of a job given the current economic climate. Especially a min wage one.

But, but, but that is an extremely simplistic view of a complication situation with possibly innumerable variables.

You get people for whom their job is truly a vocation. Perhaps they can't make enough money from that job to live off but don't want to give it up entirely.

If I moved into a different industry, I would still want to continue what I am doing in a part time capacity. I enjoy it, there is a shortage of people in my industry, and not using the skills would inevitably mean you lose them.

Pumpkin believe me there is no competition for my job at all! The company really struggle with recruitment so I don't feel guilty on that score :)
