A light hearted one...

DD3 is 14 and was going to meet some of her friends from dancing for pizza last night. This clearly required lots of thought, so she disappeared to her room to primp for a couple of hours.

When she came down, she'd carefully chosen a tiny white lacy dress and tan wedges with a clutch bag. Her make up had clearly taken some time due to the amount of eyeliner and mascara that had been applied Hmm. But she'd topped it off with a massive scrunchie perched right on top of her head, holding 2 or 3 strands of hair with the rest down!!!

DH rather confusedly said 'what on earth is on your head?' and I'm afraid I snorted with laughter.

DD of course stomped about saying we didn't understand fashion and were bad parents whose laughter may damage her self esteem.

So go on. Are scrunchies back in fashion? I remember wearing them back in the day (dinosaur!) with jeans or shorts, but they weren't paired with dresses!! And WIBU to laugh?

Oh that was pretty mean to laugh at her. I would have been gutted if DM had done that. YWBVU

Yeah - scrunchies are back...only know because my (very cool) 18 year-old SD has started wearing them.

Elephants, all my DDs do gymnastics and I vividly remember them cringing at the matching scrunchies that come with leotards, and making 'over my dead body' comments. This was probably less than a year ago, how things change!

I think if it hadn't been right on the very top of her head it would have been less bizarre, or with a casual outfit.

I really hope I haven't upset her self esteem - I'm usually a nice mum, honest! I've got a lot of sympathy for the difficult age, and definitely didn't look well put together myself then!

We do have a jokey relationship most of the time - as TheNapolean suggested, it's often a 'will you please put your arse away for once, child!' or 'you may have great abs but I don't think granny and grandpa want to see them' type chiding rather than criticism.

Well you've upset my self esteem. I've worn a scrunchie every other day for the last 25 years.

JerseySpud · 01/08/2014 10:38

Yay i love scrunchies...

OnIlkelyMoorBahtat · 01/08/2014 13:43

Wait... scrunchies went out? I've never stopped wearing them!

Curlyweasel · 01/08/2014 14:29

I think the fact that your DD feels confident enough to say you're bad parents and intelligent enough to understand that you could be damaging her self-esteem indicates she's mature (and savvy) enough to deal with a little humorous poke.

Anyhoo - tt seems to me you were laughing at your DH's response to the absurdly positioned scrunchy - not her outfit per se. To be honest - I probably would have done the same.

YANBU.

My parents always took Mickey our of my outfits and it does hurt.
