I dropped them off to watch the new 'Marvel' film, I thought it was a PG and when we got there realised it was a 12a .... they are 10!

They would have been gutted to come away so I made as snap decision and sent them in (I paid for them before leaving & no-one said anything but tbf they would easily pass for 12). I'm not to bothered about the content of the film but I've just come home to read up on what a '12a' means and it says the cinema could get into trouble for having under 12s unaccompanied!

What should I do? I can't go and watch it as I've got dd at home with me, I could at a push get grandparents over to babysit and go and sneak in ... do I just hope everything is okay? .. help!

Unless they make a nuisance of themselves, no-one's going to know.

I made this mistake once, went to drop ds1 and ds2 at cinema to watch "Transformers2" only to find it was a 12A not PG. Ds2 was 10 at the time, and certainly couldn't pass for12.

I ended up having to go in and sit through the effing film with them, when I had planned 2 houes of clothes shoppping.

BloodyNaffedOff · 01/08/2014 08:32

Oooof, that's a bit shite paxman, bloody 'Transformers' too!

I'm seeing a business opportunity for VI formers as 'cinema chaperones'

GalaxyInMyPants · 01/08/2014 10:47

I'd be a cinema chaperone. Lights go down and I always fall asleep and have a snooze. Perfect.

I took 12 year old son and friend to see Guardians of the Galaxy yesterday and decided to leave them there on their own for the first time. Both are very young-looking. Just checked the certificate before we left and saw that unaccompanied kids might be asked to produce PHOTO ID!! We took passports, almost for a laugh, but actually got asked to produce them.

So I got my 2 hours shopping!

But the guy on the door did say that G of the G was 'very sweary', so I guess the certificate is there for a reason. He also said that they sometimes have to give free tickets to adults so that they can stay and accompany kids! Seems like a good scam to me, so might try it next time!

Certificiation is weird, though, isn't it? Isn't one of the Harry Potter films a 15? And I bought the spoof DVD 'The Starving Games' for kids to watch at home. It was a 12 certificate and I thought it was VERY inappropriate. Ended up complaining to the British Board of film classification, or whatever (must have been an idle week ...) and throwing the DVD away so kids wouldn't watch it/lend it etc

When I was small my mum used to pay local teenagers to take us to the cinema.

I used to work at a cinema, if we thought children seeing a 12a were under 12 we would ask them (nicely!) with a few test questions, like what year are you in a school and birth year. The ones under 12 always failed and usually confess straight away if asked.

They would have their tickets swapped and they could go an see a film of their choice with a more appropriate certificate or they could be refunded. If they needed parents contacting the manager would offer to phone them from the office.

Mostly though we didn't bother to challenge them unless it was obvious or they were causing trouble. The cinema staff can be personally fined for letting in people who are under age and they are reminded of that constantly but it is mostly 15/18 certificate films where it is taken really seriously.
