to think a cockerel doesn't belong in a built up area...

waking us up at 5am in the summer!

It's too hot to close the windows so it's either boil in the bed (and the little girl's room gets so hot) or wake at 5am...which is preferable?!

It sounds like it's in the room with us, it's that close.

We live in a village and if there were a farm nearby then I'd think so be it. But in a garden, two houses down...argh! It's SNOT FAIR!

Is it better than a diesel powered milkman?

MoreBeta · 31/07/2014 09:33

In the old days they used to put cockerels under 'skeps' which were shallow potato picking baskets on farms to stop them crowing.

If they are kept in a roosting place which has no cracks or gaps in the walls so totally dark they don't crow either. My cockerel was almost inert in darkness and I could stroke him. In the light he turned instantly into a crowing fighting monster who just wanted to kill me.

juliascurr · 31/07/2014 09:36

the council will deal with noise issues - contact them
start keeping a diary of time/duration, how it affected you etc

PaperFlowers · 31/07/2014 09:46

You have my sympathies - our neighbours two doors down have hens that disturb us on occasion whenever it's hot enough to have the back windows open. It's not often, so we put up with it on the basis that we probably disturn them on occasion too.

Every day is too much though. Live an let live, but having a cockerel in a built up area is silly and inconsiderate IMO.

Staywithme · 31/07/2014 09:51

That made me snort!Grin

GayByrne · 31/07/2014 09:54

It's a lot better with the windows shut so I wonder if we might just get some of those quiet dyson fans for us.

I don't want to be the new kid on the block causing all sorts of trouble for Old Bert, or whoever owns the fecking thing!

Am Loling at evil cockerel too!

gaybo, i would go and ask them if they were aware that their cockerel was wakign you up at 5 am every morning? if you get a gobful back, go to the council.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 31/07/2014 11:53

YABU. However, in the deeds to our house it says that we cannot keep them. I find yapping and barking dogs keep me awake perhaps these should not be allowed in built up areas?

NigellasDealer · 31/07/2014 11:57

depends on the area = you say 'village' but that could mean all kinds of things.
our neighbours took about three days to complain after we got our cockeral = fgs why move from London suburbs to deep country and then complain about country noises!?
basically I told them to do one = my house even has an agricultural holding number = they went to the council and I will tell them to do one too.
if it rrealy is a nuisance then go to the council.

ThatBloodyWoman · 31/07/2014 13:56

I think it'd be a shame for them to have to get rid of their cockerel (which may be a loved pet) if this is something you think you may be able to overcome.

Crinkle77 · 31/07/2014 13:58

I've got a pigeon that waks me up at 5 am. It must sit on the roof above the bedroom and coos away for hours. I have ear plugs

ThatBloodyWoman · 31/07/2014 14:01

In the country you learn to cope with owls, pheasants etc making a racquet.
In the town you learn to cope with motorbikes, delivery lorries etc making a racquet.
I don't see why there should be no town-country crossover.

GilmoursPillow · 01/08/2014 08:54

I'm listening to one crowing right now. Why the fuck it needs to shout its head off now, after it's already done the 4.15am shift this morning, I do not know.

It's across the road from my Mum's where I'm staying, and while I'm tempted to go over there and bang on their door to tell them to shut the thing up when it starts, I'm not sure it would do much for my Mum's relationship with her neighbours.
I really don't get why people think it's ok to have such a noise-maker in a densely populated, but normally quiet area.

Cars and motorbikes wake me up at times.
I haven't got one,and I live rurally.
I think they should be banned from my area....Wink

GilmoursPillow · 01/08/2014 09:13

Is that a proven remedy Coco? Grin

My neighbours have cockerels , and one of them was one of those huge black creatures with feathery feet , which used to start crowing at about 3.30am , pause for breath at 10 am then keep going till sundown. Used to drive my other neighbours absolutely spare. Then one day I heard a scuffling going on on my other neighbour's drive but knew he wasn't in . Looked over the fence to find my greyhound with both knees on its chest , and her teeth round it's neck trying to wrestle it into submission . So I bellowed at her , whereupon she jumped , spat it out amidst a cloud of black feathers , and it took the opportunity to do a runner down the fields , swearing mightily , never to be seen again . Alas , the owner then came running out of her house , with her hands in the air shrieking "that's my Maaaaaarmiiiiiite ". Turned out the hound had scaled an eight foot fence , crossed the road , found the henhouse , and dragged the thing out right under her nose . Cost me a fortune to replace . She couldn't pick the cheap cockerel now could she . Oh no .

Namechangearoonie123 · 01/08/2014 09:33

Fine to object to cockerels, they shouldn't be in built up areas

But objecting to hens is a bit harsh , mine make a fuck of a lot less noise than all children, cars starting, other people's music etc.

Ladymoods · 01/08/2014 09:34

Our neighbour's dog does exactly the same so can dogs be banned too please or can I catch it, kill it and put it in a stew? Great, that's dinner sorted for a couple of days. Noisy little bastard.

sebsmummy1 · 01/08/2014 09:43

Yep complain, it's unacceptable in a built up area, people should be more courteous to their neighbours. My friend had two and I hated the fucking things. I also had to look after two as part of my job and they were nasty switchy bastards. Also used to peck then feathers out of the hen birds as they were mounting them and the hens looked absolutely dishevelled and miserable.

We have a dog somewhere near us that barks all night. Last night I decided to try and track it down at 11pm but It would start and then stop so my trail kept running cold. When I find out what house it is emanating from I shall write a polite note ANC pop it through the door.

HappyAgainOneDay · 01/08/2014 09:43

Oh dear. How can we stop dogs from barking, church bells from ringing, cattle from lowing, chickens from clucking, sheep from bleating, donkeys from baying, horses from neighing, telephones from ringing, cats from mewing, computers from clicking, doors from slamming, donkeys from braying, people from shouting, garden birds from singing just to please everyone at the same time ...........?

sebsmummy1 · 01/08/2014 09:44

*and

Ladymoods · 01/08/2014 11:15

I heard some children enjoying themselves the other day. It's a fucking disgrace.

HermioneSnape02 · 01/08/2014 12:19

I know someone people are joking but sleep deprivation is horrible.

Our neighbour has a cockerel and it starts crowing at 3am every morning. My daughter is shattered as it keeps crowing up to and beyond 9am. We are going to have to complain.

It's just not right!
